Illinois deer hunters face new tactics to managing herd

Deer hunters across Illinois remain curious about what the 2025 season will look like after lawmakers this spring pushed through measures to rejigger the permit process for taking nuisance whitetails and restructured landowner permit allocations.
At the same time, DNR’s new 5-year pilot project aimed at evaluating its own CWD monitoring process launches this year, altering the much-aligned sharpshooting program in northern counties and the way biologists collect deer samples across the state.

Gretchen Steele: Remembering outdoor adventures that made us

I realize that Father’s Day will have come and gone by the time you read this, but it is Father’s Day when I sit down to pen my upcoming column on an early Sunday morning. My own father, a man of few words but immense wisdom, has been gone a very long time now, but I seem to be in a reflective mood.
It’s a familiar image, almost mythic: a father and child setting out into the great outdoors, a tackle box in one hand, a trail map in the other, and the quiet promise of discovery stretched ahead.

Ron Schara: The good, the bad, the ugly for outdoor users from Minnesota’s 2025 legislative session

When you cast an idea into unknown waters, such as the Minnesota Legislature, sometimes it succeeds, sometimes it sinks, and sometimes you wonder if lawmakers are listening or if they give a damn.
There’s a 125-year-old fish hatchery on Warner Road in St. Paul that’s being held together with duct tape. It’s the only fish hatchery in the metro region. It’s too discombobulated to allow tours for school kids. It’s an embarrassment for a state of Minnesota, where fishing is a lifestyle and a $6.6 billion-plus economic boost to the state’s economy.

Ohio budget wrangling could cost DNR funds

Budget time in Ohio could spell a setback in revenue for Ohio State Parks and Watercraft unless the General Assembly’s conference committee or Gov. Mike DeWine take action against it.
In the Senate-approved version of the budget bill (HB96), general fund money that would ordinarily go to the park system was cut – at least for the next two years. The Ohio Senate wants $30 million in royalty bonus payments from oil and gas drilling in state parks to make up the resulting shortfall. Thus far, the state has received only bonus money from drilling companies.

Ohio’s Lake Erie yellow perch turn on in hot July

If the past few years are any indication, anglers eager to fill their freezers with yellow perch need to be ready to start fishing Lake Erie as soon as the calendar page turns to July.
High metabolism rates that are produced with warm lake water temperatures have the perch looking to consume as much prey as their stomachs can fit just to break even with calories burned versus consumed.
