PFOS concerns create new health guidelines for eating Michigan’s fish

Michigan health officials issued nearly 1,000 new or updated Eat Safe Fish guidelines for 2025, driven by samples from dozens of new waterbodies and revised thresholds for perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS).
The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services typically updates the Eat Safe Fish guidelines annually based on test results from the Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy’s fish contamination monitoring program, which samples between 1,000 and 2,000 fish per year.

High school student earns 20th Maryland Master Angler award

Nathan Choinski, of Churchville, has earned a Master Angler Milestone Award under the Maryland Department of Natural Resources’ FishMaryland program.
Choinski is the 20th Master Angler since the program began in 2019. The award recognizes recreational anglers who catch 10 trophy-sized fish of different species in Maryland.

Pennsylvania Mixed Bag: West Falls Access to be temporarily limited to carry-in, unpowered boat use

The Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission recently announced that the West Falls Access, which provides fishing and boating access to the North Branch Susquehanna River in Exeter Township, Wyoming County, will be limited to carry-in, unpowered boat use through Sept. 10.

Centre County kayaker drowns in Pennsylvania’s Youghiogheny River

A Centre County man died while kayaking with friends on the Youghiogheny River at Ohiopyle State Park in Fayette County, Pa., June 13.
Michael Barney, 43, of State College, drowned when his kayak got caught in rapids on the lower Youghiogheny, according to Fayette County coroner Dr. Bob Baker, who was dispatched at 7:19 p.m. Barney was a longtime whitewater enthusiast who frequented the river.

Delaware is named Pennsylvania’s River of the Year for 2025

The Department of Conservation and Natural Resources recently joined the Pennsylvania Organization for Waterways and Rivers to celebrate the Delaware River’s selection as Pennsylvania’s 2025 River of the Year.
The announcement was marked with a community festival at Minisink Park in Monroe County, held alongside the 30th annual Delaware River Sojourn.
