Commentary: Why Sportsmen for the Boundary Waters opposes this mine in this place

For a decade, Sportsmen for the Boundary Waters has worked to defend the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness for future generations of hunters, anglers, and paddlers.
The BWCA is a federally designated wilderness area that offers some of the most incredible outdoor pursuits in an ecologically and geologically unique landscape. Self-sustaining populations of lake trout, ruffed and spruce grouse lining the woods, loons wailing through the night on nearly every lake; all the best things about northern Minnesota wrapped up in 1.1 million acres of publicly accessible, pristine, protected wilderness.

Crossbow bill passes New York Legislature, clearing way for much more use in archery season

On Tuesday, June 17, at the eleventh hour, the New York State Assembly voted on, and passed A08330-A, legislation that clears the way for crossbows to be used in any big game archery season. The Senate also passed the bill (S06360A) on June 11 with a vote of 57-2, while the Assembly’s vote was unanimous.
For crossbow hunting enthusiasts, the passage is the major hurdle they’ve been looking to clear since the last crossbow bill passed in 2014. The legislation is now headed to the desk of Gov. Kathy Hochul.

Minnesota DNR mulls turkey zone changes to obtain better population information

If you’re basing your outlook strictly on harvest, the last two spring turkey-hunting seasons in Minnesota have been the best in recorded history. In 2024 and 2025, spring hunters bagged 16,714 and 16,918 turkeys, respectively.
“I would argue that the last two springs are the two best seasons we’ve had since the season opened in Minnesota for wild turkeys in 1978,” said Nate Huck, Minnesota DNR acting resident game bird consultant.

Lower-than-expected elk numbers in Minnesota DNR survey prompts decrease in available tags for 2025

After conducting the 2025 elk survey earlier this year, Minnesota DNR officials decided that offering only four elk tags for the state’s hunters was an appropriate number – and a cautious approach – given the winter population survey.
“Lower-than-expected abundance was the primary factor playing into this year’s lower number of permits for state hunters,” said Blane Klemek, the DNR’s northwest region wildlife manager.

Laurel Caverns will become Pennsylvania’s first underground state park

Laurel Caverns in Fayette County is poised to become Pennsylvania’s first underground state park, pending approval by the state Legislature.
Gov. Josh Shapiro included the designation with a $5 million allocation in his 2025-26 budget, with an eye toward enhanced tourism and conservation of the cave’s geological features. Located on Chestnut Ridge in Forbes State Forest, Laurel Caverns is the largest calcareous sandstone cave in Pennsylvania and would become the state’s 125th state park.
