Ohio State University’s Stone Lab will mark its 100th year this fall

In 1895, Ohio State University (OSU) professor David S. Kellicott, who had been studying Lake Erie in the late 1800s, recommended that the university establish a field station to study biology and especially the important fishing industry.
Following his advice, OSU spent $350 to add a second story to the state fish hatchery in Sandusky that year and offered the first classes of the “Lake Laboratory” in 1900.

Tom Venesky: How will Pennsylvania’s wet spring impact this year’s turkey poults?

Another week, another inch of rain. Or two.

Walleye rearing ponds boost fisheries across Michigan

Walleye fishing in Michigan would suffer without rearing ponds. Rearing ponds outproduce all of Michigan’s hatchery production by far, and it’s possible that they even produce a better product.
“There’s no question that walleye fishing in Michigan would not be as good, nor as widespread, were it not for rearing ponds,” admitted Michigan DNR Fisheries Biologist Jason Gostiaux, who serves as co-chair of the state’s walleye committee.

Commentary: Pennsylvania’s trout stream classification changes – gain or loss?

A recent phone call from a friend about the status of a small central Pennsylvania stream gave me pause to reflect. The stream in question – I’ll call it “Rhododendron Run” (not its real name) – was stocked by the Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission with a couple hundred trout. A few adults fished there, but for local kids, it was a safe place where they could walk or ride their bikes to fish. Landowners were happy.
A while back, the commission halted stocking.
