Commentary: Why Sportsmen for the Boundary Waters opposes this mine in this place

The author says advances in mining have made the industry unrecognizable from its past, but the risk remains as it pertains to operating a copper-nickel sulfide mine near the shores of Birch Lake, directly upstream from the Boundary Waters. (Photo by Rob Drieslein)

For a decade, Sportsmen for the Boundary Waters has worked to defend the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness for future generations of hunters, anglers, and paddlers.
The BWCA is a federally designated wilderness area that offers some of the most incredible outdoor pursuits in an ecologically and geologically unique landscape. Self-sustaining populations of lake trout, ruffed and spruce grouse lining the woods, loons wailing through the night on nearly every lake; all the best things about northern Minnesota wrapped up in 1.1 million acres of publicly accessible, pristine, protected wilderness.
