Hen mallard steals the show on the Minnesota DNR’s EagleCam

When Minnesota DNR staff with the Nongame Wildlife Program situated a camera on its resident eagle pair’s nest along the Mississippi River this fall, they didn’t expect the pair to set up a new nest about 300 yards away.
For the past several months, there hasn’t been up-close, live-nesting coverage – until a female mallard was discovered in the former nest. And thus, the DuckCam was born.

Ohio’s Grand Lake St. Marys will be stocked with saugeyes

Anglers who fish the waters of 13,500-acre Grand Lake St. Marys may hook 14-inch saugeye by summer 2026 if efforts by the Ohio Division of Wildlife go as planned.
The division intends to stock 135,000 sterile saugeye fingerlings in the lake in the coming months. An equal number will be stocked each spring for the next five years.

Jeremiah Haas: Here’s how to age your turkey

Turkey season is ongoing and many people are now looking at the birds they harvested, wondering just how old that bird is. For deer hunters, age is talked about all the time, usually to allow animals to mature to larger sizes.
Turkey hunters rarely talk about a turkey’s age, except for jakes. Separating turkeys by age is usually done with three age classes: 1-year-olds, 2-year-olds, and 3-year-olds or older. For biologists, these three age classes are enough to evaluate population trends, reproduction rates, harvest rates and tag numbers.

Understand the forage to become a better bass angler

If you’re like most bass anglers, you go to the lake, tie on favorite baits and head to spots where you’ve caught them before. If that doesn’t get you many bites, you switch baits and try another spot.
And another spot. That can work, but don’t overlook one of the biggest factors to dialing up more action; the bass dinner table.

Pennsylvania charity event combines fishing, helping sick kids

When George Bowers started Fishing for a Cause in 2000 in northeast Pennsylvania, the purpose was simple.
An avid angler, Bowers wanted to use his love of fishing to brighten the day for children battling serious illnesses. He did so by making annual trips to the Janet Weis Children’s Hospital in Danville and the Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center in Wilkes-Barre, delivering gifts of fishing rods and reels to children who had to spend the Christmas holidays in the hospital.

Dan Ladd: Be safe on New York’s waters this spring

It’s been an interesting spring – or lack thereof – for nearly all of New York thus far. The thermometer has been riding an up-and-down roller coaster-like pattern and nearly everyone I’ve talked to, especially boating anglers, are wondering if the wind will ever quit blowing.
Should the long-term weather forecast I’m looking at around press time hold, things are about to change for the better and just in time for the May 1 spring gobbler opener and of course, fishing seasons for walleyes, northern pike, tiger muskies and pickerel.
