Turkey season is ongoing and many people are now looking at the birds they harvested, wondering just how old that bird is. For deer hunters, age is talked about all the time, usually to allow animals to mature to larger sizes.
Turkey hunters rarely talk about a turkey’s age, except for jakes. Separating turkeys by age is usually done with three age classes: 1-year-olds, 2-year-olds, and 3-year-olds or older. For biologists, these three age classes are enough to evaluate population trends, reproduction rates, harvest rates and tag numbers.
