Into year eight, have Minnesota’s northern pike zones made a difference?

Former longtime Minnesota DNR fisheries supervisor Gary Barnard was one of the co-chairs of the northern pike technical committee that got new regulations and zones put in place – just before his retirement in 2019.
To jog the memory, in 2018, the DNR divided Minnesota into three northern pike zones. Under each zone, there would be special pike regulations in place.

There’s value in night-fishing beneath the moon and stars

Andy’s noodly catfish rod bucked and plunged toward the surface of the Mississippi River, as below, a leviathan in the depths waged war on the hook and line that had it tethered. After fighting the fish for several minutes, we could tell the big flathead was begrudgingly nearing the surface.
But still, the Coleman lantern perched atop a cooler for added height and visibility hadn’t yet illuminated the beast below.

If you want to fill your spring turkey tag, learn what the hens like to do

It’s understandable that the focus on spring turkey-hunting tactics leans heavily in the gobbler’s direction. Yet, in April and May, longbeards mostly center their attention on the ladies of the species. Where the hens go, so, too, go the gobblers.
This is pretty basic stuff, but understanding the daily habits of hens can help you figure out just how and when to call, when to actually hunt, and what to do if the birds become tight-lipped.

A natural leader, Jeff Manke honored as Minnesota Outdoor News’ 2025 Person of the Year

For all Minnesotans who fashion themselves outdoors types, spring is a busy time – busy, in the most positive and exciting sense of the word. Turkey hunting, fishing, and more, all of which consume a magnificent season of the year in our state.
Jeff Manke, again this spring, will take the concept of being busy to greater extremes than will the average person preparing his boat or smiling upon the most recent green-up of woods and grasslands.

Outdoor Observations: Here’s why Michigan’s federal funds for the outdoors has declined recently

A news story in the last edition of Michigan Outdoor News outlined the Michigan DNR’s federal appropriation from the Wildlife and Sportfish Restoration Fund.
I was awaiting a response from DNR, but it arrived too late for me to be able to add it to the story. One of the questions I asked is why Michigan’s total appropriation has declined in recent years (down $1.1 million from 2024 and down $5.4 million from 2023 to 2024.)

Lin Gamble earns Pennsylvania Outdoor News’ 2025 Person of the Year honor

Many people had given up on Tubmill Creek, a stocked trout stream in northern Westmoreland County, Pa., but not Lin Gamble. Along with the non-profit Tubmill Trout Club, Gamble has been working to improve their namesake stream and its tributaries since 1998.
From its headwaters on Laurel Hill, Tubmill Creek flows northwest to where it is dammed to form Tubmill Reservoir.

Outdoor Insights: Sea lamprey control program can’t be on the chopping block

I spoke with Don Pereira last week, the former head of Minnesota DNR Fisheries. Pereira retired from the agency in 2018 then served as a commissioner on the Great Lakes Fishery Commission. He still chairs the group’s Sea Lamprey Control Board.
Everyone know the sea lamprey story? The blood suckers are one of the nastiest aquatic invasive species ever. They got into the upper Great Lakes in the early 20th century with the opening of the St. Lawrence Seaway and by the 1950s and ’60s had wiped out lake trout and other sport fisheries.

Commentary: Time to protect Ohioans’ right to hunt, fish, and trap

The time-honored traditions of hunting and fishing – cornerstones of the Ohio’s heritage, economy, and community life – are being threatened.
From Oregon to New Mexico, radical proposals nationwide are looking to criminalize casting a line or harvesting game. Yes, you read that correctly – a crime to catch a fish! Ohio’s lawmakers have a chance to ensure these radical policies never make it to the Buckeye State by passing a constitutional amendment to forever safeguard these rights.
