Hunters warned that record levels of ‘forever chemicals’ found in wildlife near New Mexico base

Environmental regulators and health officials in New Mexico are warning hunters that harmful chemicals known to cause cancer in people have been found at record levels in birds, small mammals and plants at a lake near Holloman Air Force Base.
In fact, state officials say the findings are some of the highest levels documented in wildlife and plants worldwide based on comparisons with other published studies. Researchers contracted by the state tested muscle, liver and bone tissue in ducks, other birds and rodents as well as eggshells, algae and even skin shed by a rattlesnake.

Steps taken to expand deer harvest in Illinois

A proposal to expand the seven-day firearms season and a separate one to allow rifle hunters to move on from single-shot weapons have been introduced in the 104th Illinois General Assembly.
Neither piece of legislation is expected to get much traction, but they serve as stern indications that 2025 may finally be the year of change for the state’s deer and deer hunters. Meanwhile, a DNR program manager, speaking at a public meeting called to discuss crop damage caused by deer, suggested steps to rework deer seasons and harvest quotas are in play.

Mike Raykovicz: Looking into the push to kill barred owls to protect spotted owls in Oregon

As a turkey hunter, I never get tired of hearing the early morning hoot of a barred owl. It’s even more fun when two or more of them hoot to each other.  The “who– who–who-cooks-for-you” call is as familiar to hunters as a wild turkey gobble.
Owls are a protected species almost everywhere but, believe it or not, last August the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service came up with a plan to kill up to 450,000 barred owls over a period of 30 years in the state of Oregon. Why, I wondered, would anyone want to do such a thing?

Wisconsin State Roundup: U.S. Rep. Tom Tiffany will attempt again to get timber wolves delisted

U.S. Rep. Tom Tiffany (R-Wis.) will make another run at removing timber wolves from the federal Endangered Species List beginning this week. That’s the word coming in off the street as of Wednesday, Jan. 29.
Whispers that day said Tiffany would officially introduce his wolf delisting bill in the House of Representatives on Friday, Jan. 31. With the house not in session these days, bills may only be introduced on Tuesdays or Fridays. In May 2022, Tiffany and Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.) introduced the Trust the Science Act with the backing of 21 other congress members to also delist wolves. It passed the House of Representatives, but not the U.S. Senate.

Wisconsin DNR ups bear quota, number of kill tags

The Wisconsin Natural Resources Board (NRB) approved a 6% increase in the black bear harvest quota and a 14% increase in licenses from 2024 for the 2025 fall season.
The target harvest of black bears is now set at 4,075 (3,850 last year). The number of licenses available this year will be 13,110 (from 11,501 last year). Randy Johnson, the DNR’s large carnivore specialist, told the board at its Jan. 22 meeting that the bear population is stable or growing in all of the bear zones except Zone D in the northwest.
