Nonresident hunters and anglers are a revenue boon to South Dakota, and some are about to pay more

South Dakota’s Game, Fish and Parks Department’s Wildlife Division has released year-to-date data on hunting and fishing license sales, and one thing is clear: Nonresidents bring in a lot of revenue. And with fee increases on the way, nonresidents are likely to start bringing in even more.

Ben Moyer: Will winter-kill of whitetails return to Pennsylvania this year?

The complexity of managing white-tailed deer in today’s world has become apparent to all stakeholders. But deer management may be about to become even more complicated because of the possible reemergence of a variable we haven’t thought about for decades in Pennsylvania – winter mortality.
Readers who lived through the 1960s and ‘70s recall deer winter-kill was a continual concern among hunters and wildlife managers. In northern mountains, trout anglers then often reported dead deer along streams as the snow melted in April.

Man pleads guilty to poaching popular buck known as ‘King Louie’ in New York

A Montgomery County man faces over $3,000 in fines and court fees after pleading guilty to four charges connected to an early December poaching incident of a popular trophy caliber buck.
According to police reports, in the early morning hours of Dec. 5, Christopher Brownell, of Fultonville, illegally killed what would have been a New York State record book buck. The buck, known locally as King Louie, was recognizable as it carried a massive, palmated set of antlers and was thought to be 8.5 years old at the time of his demise.

Outdoor Insights: A special muskie regulation on Minnesota’s Leech Lake?

Leech Lake and its muskies have become ground zero in debate about forward-facing sonar and whether new regulations could protect big fish later into summer.
A document – “Minnesota’s Muskie Dilemma” –  reached my email in-box last week that outlines growing concern about the “over-catching” phenomena there in early summer using FFS in combination with other gadgets.

Notes off a soiled cuff: Pennsylvania readers not fans of recent story that ran

When we needed a filler story last issue, I chose the piece about “Buzzard man” in Ohio, who has killed 12,000 groundhogs, even though the story made me feel a bit uncomfortable. (I find it unseemly when someone brags about outlandish hunting and fishing exploits.) But we had a great photo of the guy, he is ex-military and we were on deadline, so I pulled the trigger. (See what I did there?)
Turns out, the Buzzard man story bothered long-time reader Joe McDonald, of McClure, Pa., way more than it did me, but for an entirely different reason. And he made some valid points.
