North Dakota Game and Fish Director addresses the state’s hunting, fishing picture

Hunting, fishing, trapping and conservation issues can change quickly with a nasty winter, disease and other influences that challenge the animals on the landscape and the people who pursue them. Then again, sometimes the stars align and both animals and people benefit.
To see where North Dakota has been of late and what’s in store down the road, Jeb Williams, Game and Fish Department director, assesses the state of the state from an outdoor perspective.

Wisconsin Warden Darren Kuhn returns to roots for deer opener

Darren Kuhn, an administrative Wisconsin DNR conservation warden in the Green Bay area, was called upon to help a field warden with patrol on opening day of the gun deer season in Kewaunee County, where he had been stationed for the last five years. Kuhn began his game warden career in 1998.
DNR administrative wardens, and others who were once field wardens, usually are called upon to assist field wardens during popular hunting and fishing season openers.

Pittman-Robertson dollars dip for Minnesota; State audit of DNR use of federal dollars on WMAs expected in coming months

After peaking at an all-time high of about $34.4 million two years ago, funds the state of Minnesota is eligible to receive from the federal Wildlife Restoration Act (aka, the Pittman-Robertson fund) slid downward again this year – from about $28.2 million in 2024 to $26.1 million in 2025.
At the same time, funding from the federal Sport Fish Restoration Fund (Dingell-Johnson Act) for the state grew from about $13.1 million last year to about $14.1 million, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Oak Duke: A missed opportunity right as a New York deer season slips away

It was going to be a textbook hunt on the final day of the 2024 New York State firearms deer season. My confidence was peaking. I’ve filled my share of tags on the last day of the season.
A soft southerly wind caressed the mid-December snow cover, directly from the south. So that necessitated a long hike, circling around the hunting property ridge-top woodlot. That way my entry point would be directly downwind of any whitetails munching and digging out acorns under the big oak stand.

Minnesota’s 2025 elk survey completed, and thermal imaging may help future counts

After a year during which a lack of snow precluded the Minnesota DNR’s annual survey of northwestern elk, this year’s attempt went off without a hitch, state officials say.
“We were able to do it this year, and snow conditions were darn good. We have actually more snow up in the far northwest than a lot of places in the state,” said Blane Klemek, the DNR’s northwest regional wildlife manager.

Streams of Thought: Too cold for ice fishing, and an update on vacancies within the Minnesota DNR

Across a crowded room at the DNR’s recent Roundtable, I spotted Scott’s signature cowboy hat and, beneath it, Scott himself. I meant to work my way toward that hat and wish Scott the best, but alas, too many other bodies blocked the way and mine was absorbed by the masses.

Steve Sarley: Wildlife and ‘vigilantism’ not a wise combination – anywhere

Thank you all for putting up with my lengthy tale about the disappearing wild turkey flock here in my hometown of Wheaton, Ill.
I enjoyed writing it and I was certain that humans had eliminated the turkeys, but I was wrong. I was shocked to get mail that said that some folks thought it was OK to eliminate the turkey flock if it was damaging the paint jobs on cars by pecking with their beaks. I can’t figure out the rationale in that argument.
