North Dakota uses online ‘Coyote Catalog’ to connect hunters with landowners

It’s pretty easy to disparage the electronic age in which we live. Yet, there’s no shortage of examples of how electronics have improved not just the safety but also the efficiency and enjoyment of our time outdoors.
I can get along just fine without my phone when I’m outdoors. But there’s a flip side.

Dave Trauba named to lead Minnesota DNR’s Wildlife Section

Dave Trauba was reminiscing the other day about growing up in rural southeastern Wisconsin, where his love of the outdoors – including hunting and fishing – was nurtured by his immediate family.
“I grew up in a family with a strong hunting tradition,” said Trauba, adding that he lived near two storied marshes – Horicon and Theresa – where ducks and geese were abundant. “My fondest memories are with my grandpa, dad, and brothers hunting waterfowl. Those were magical times that left an impression on me. Truth is, I was lucky because I knew what I wanted to be when I was a sophomore in high school.”

Minnesota’s CREP 3 expanded to 75,000 acres, extended to 2039

State and federal officials a week ago signed a new agreement that extends Minnesota’s current and ongoing Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program into 2039 and adds an additional 15,000 acres to the 60,000-acre program.
CREP 3, the third such effort in the state since about 2002, now will include 12 additional Minnesota counties, and requirements to qualify for the program – which includes state and federal payments for perpetual conservation easements – will change slightly, officials say.

Pro Fishing Tip of the Week: An Achilles heel in forward-facing sonar?

But there is one thing they all have in common: They do not show a fish lying on the bottom or barely off the bottom – fish that are working the bottom with their noses while feeding on aquatic crustaceans The separation that all sonars need to distinguish fish near the bottom is a half-inch to three-quarter inches.

Here are Ohio’s best winter steelhead bets

Drought conditions in 2024 hindered the start of the annual steelhead migration in Ohio. Anglers found fall-run fish staging along the Lake Erie shoreline more than they did moving upstream in the rivers.
The rains finally came, the water soaked in the ground, without affecting the river levels as normally seen. It wasn’t until after Christmas when rains filled the rivers. A welcomed relief, the water rising, but tough conditions.
