Wolf pack that attacked Colorado livestock to be relocated as reintroduction program stumbles

Wildlife agencies are trying to capture and relocate the first pack of wolves that formed under Colorado’s ambitious wolf reintroduction program after the animals repeatedly attacked livestock, marking an early stumble in the voter-driven initiative.
The move comes only a week after state officials touted three pups born to the Copper Creek pack, which formed after 10 of the predators from Oregon were released in December over bitter opposition from livestock groups. The pack has at least two adults.

New York Department of Environmental Conservation takes non-lead ammo rebate statewide

Building on a previous incentive-based program to encourage hunters to use non-lead ammunition, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation recently announced the expansion of a rebate program and its ongoing study that focuses on the use of lead in hunting ammunition.
In 2022, DEC released the Minimizing Risks to Wildlife and People from Lead Hunting Ammunition report. They followed up prior to the 2023 hunting season with a rebate program in limited areas that allowed hunters who voluntarily purchased non-lead ammunition up to a $60 rebate.

Mike Raykovicz: Searching for ways to ease the burden of squirrels

Marauding thieves, shameless beggars, pilfering pirates. That’s what I’ve come to view the squirrels in our backyard as.
My wife and I love seeing the cardinals, juncos, chickadees, and sundry other birds when they visit our bird feeder. That is when there is any seed in it. It appears the local squirrels have come to see it as an all-you-can-eat Las Vegas buffet.

Dove hunting an underutilized opportunity for North Dakota hunters

I grew up in an era before the early August goose hunt, and 25 years later it still feels a bit odd to think of hunters swatting mosquitoes and lathering on sunscreen.
Our first hunt of the season was mourning doves in early September. Where birds were plentiful, the sense of accomplishment was a dozen birds from a box of shells. More misses than hits were the norm. Mike Szymanski, North Dakota Game and Fish migratory bird supervisor, is one of those who appreciates the opportunity.
“Dove opener has never been an ‘unofficial holiday’ in North Dakota as it is in other states. It’s a shame because we really do have a lot of dove hunting opportunities and not many dove hunters,” he said.

Iowa’s roadside pheasant count down from 2023, but good season still expected

Results of Iowa’s 2024 pheasant population survey are in and the results were nearly identical to the 2022 and 2021 surveys.
The annual August roadside survey found Iowa’s statewide pheasant population to be 19 birds per 30-mile route, down from 23 birds per route in 2023. The decline was expected after much of Iowa received 3-7 inches of rainfall above normal during the nesting season.

Minnesota hockey camp empowers those with disabilities to give paddling the Boundary Waters a try

In 2018, friends Tony Lang and Dan Lilya brought a vision to life in the form of the Boundary Waters Sled Hockey Combine, a camp that combines sled hockey game play and training with a day trip into the Boundary Water Canoe Area Wilderness for its campers with disabilities.
“The wheelchairs go up in a separate canoe, the wheelchairs are set there, and the players own it. They get out, they go across that portage there without help – only teammates help teammates.  Coaches or parents are not allowed to assist or make it easy for them,” Lang said. “That is definitely our capstone, most unique event.”
