Bob Gwizdz: Some big pike, and especially smallmouth, keep anglers busy on Michigan’s Kalamazoo River

Back in the ’80s, when I lived in Texas, I used to make annual pilgrimages to southeast Oklahoma or western Arkansas, to fish for smallmouth bass in the streams in the Ouachitas (which pass for mountains in that part of the world, sort of like the Porcupines do here in Michigan).
I grew up fishing for smallmouths and though there was some pretty good brown bass fishing to be found in Texas, it was typically in deep, clear-water, canyon-type reservoirs, not in streams.

North Dakota land transfer bill sparks concerns

Outdoor enthusiasts across the United States have a wealth of places to recreate, in a variety of settings. Some prefer the serenity of a northern Minnesota lake, while others might favor a mountain hike in Colorado.
For me, the ideal spot is a secluded area that overlooks the Little Missouri River in southwestern North Dakota, nestled within an 1,800-acre parcel of federal Bureau of Land Management land. Here, I can unzip my tent and scan the landscape as I look for deer that hid among the mature cottonwoods lining the river.

Minnesota Conservation Federation rallies groups to set up conservation network

The Minnesota Conservation Federation hosted a kick-off meeting on Thursday, Aug. 22, for a new conservation venture, preliminarily dubbed the “Minnesota Conservation Network.”
The network’s goal is to serve as a conduit for groups and organizations to connect with one another on topics in which more than one organization is interested. Greg Kvale, who’s been affiliated with various conservation organizations for many years and is a former forester with the Minnesota DNR, said he believes that after the dissolution of the Minnesota Outdoor Heritage Alliance there’s been a missing link in Minnesota conservation.

Tom Venesky: Trail camera bans need conclusive evidence

The use of trail cameras on public land, or for hunting purposes in general, has been restricted by a number of states, such as Arizona, Delaware, Kansas and Utah. Iowa was close to banning trail camera use on public land, but in June decided to hold off on the proposal to allow for more public input.

Streams of Thought: A brief reprieve from politics as Minnesota welcomes a new hunting season

Let’s take a break, shall we, from politics, the relentless barrage of coverage and conversation of which has left folks, including me, overwhelmed and often agitated. How about a brief reprieve?
Hunting seasons, finally and mercifully, have arrived. Early waterfowl and bear hunting begin Sunday. Grouse, deer, and regular waterfowl seasons (and others slightly less attended) follow in mid-September. My October pheasant-hunting plans are in progress. Let us rejoice!

Russ Mason: Are natural resource agencies losing appreciation for paying customers?

When it comes to conservation and sustainable populations of fish and wildlife, state agencies are doing too much with too little.
“Doing more with less” is an unrealistic euphemism. More to the point, it’s inequitable given the “some-users-pay” model that currently is the foundation for most state-based conservation. And yet, being impractical (and fiscally unsound) doesn’t mean existing trends won’t continue.
