Bass, pike, walleyes leading the way on Wisconsin’s Pike Lake in Marathon County

Pike Lake, an impounded drainage lake in eastern Marathon County, receives water primarily from Rice Lake Creek on the north shore. The outlet stream at the south end drains into the Plover River. A small dam on the outflowing creek was put in place to raise water levels for recreation.

New crossbows can be pricey, but almost always effective

The crossbow craze isn’t losing momentum as more states allow the use of these speedsters, with some even reaching speeds of more than 500 feet per second. Some models cost more than a trusty deer rifle and require more maintenance than your .30-06.
Still, there’s no questioning their accuracy and effectiveness in the field.

Ask a Fisheries Biologist: What is Wisconsin’s redhorse grand slam?

Saltwater anglers often pursue a ‘grand slam’ that involves catching four prized sport fish in the same day. Technically, the IGFA says a grand slam is three species, but apparently they fish more than play baseball, and here we will consider a grand slam as four species.
It is a fun idea, challenging anglers to diversify their approach and understand how to target more than just a single species. In northern Wisconsin anglers have the opportunity for a redhorse grand slam.

Wolf grabs dog just 15 feet from Woodruff, Wis., woman

“It’s hard to determine where a wolf will be at 6:30 in the morning,” said USDA Wildlife Services district supervisor Dave Ruid. But Denise Coron found out the hard way that a wolf could be right next to her Woodruff, Wis., house at 6:30 a.m. on Tuesday, July 30.
She let her dogs out in the morning, as she always did. Her Labrador retriever and Great Dane ventured out into the yard, but her Chihuahua stuck close by. Suddenly, a wolf came from around the corner of the house, grabbed the Chihuahua and bolted off.

Wisconsin DNR team tracking Couderay River sturgeon, smallies after 2011 dam removal allowed fish to roam

The term fish passage in rivers has been a buzzword for years among fish biologists and is often used when describing the advantages of allowing fish to move upstream or down to find suitable habitat and breeding grounds without being stopped by dams.
“It’s amazing to see what the fish can do when the habitats get reconnected,” said Max Wolter, DNR Sawyer County fisheries biologist in Hayward, Wis.
