Minnesota’s Pro Tip of the Week: Time to prepare for springtime walleye fishing

Thinking outside the box can be difficult moving into a new open-water fishing season. Our 2023-24 winter was a nonevent that we hadn’t previously experienced. With warm weather and little snow, lakes and rivers likely will be extremely low if there’s not increased moisture this spring.

Her term expires on January 4, 2027, and she’s filling Ashley Peters’ spot after she stepped down from the council and became a public affairs specialist for U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) Midwest Region headquarters.

Modest crowd turns out for Public Lands Day in Minnesota

A light crowd of about 110 people attended a Public Lands Day rally last Friday, April 5, at the Minnesota State Capitol in St. Paul. Organizers chalked up the light attendance to fine conditions out-of-doors (59 degrees and sunny) and poor, end-of-the-week timing when the Capitol halls typically are quiet.

Tensions over legislation that would transfer state land to two Ojibwe bands in northern Minnesota also didn’t help attendance.

More details on wolf shot in southern Michigan, the first sighting in a century

An animal a Michigan hunter thought was a big coyote when he shot it in January has been determined to be a gray wolf, the first time the species has been found in southern Michigan in more than a century, wildlife officials say.
The hunter shot the wolf in Calhoun County, in the southern reaches of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula, while taking part in legal coyote hunting while accompanied by a guide, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources said.

Minnesota tourist killed by an elephant in Zambia

Family members described an American tourist who was killed in Africa when a bull elephant charged the truck she was riding in as an adventurer who loved to travel.
They identified her as Gail Mattson, 79, of Minnetonka. She was with other tourists on a game drive in a Zambian national park when the animal charged, flipping over the vehicle, and killing her, a safari company said April 4.
