Yellow perch, sunfish safest Ohio fish to eat, according to department of health

If you happen to be on an Ohio lake and catch a mess of yellow perch and bluegills, it is safe to make two meals a week from that catch.
That is one of the highlights of the 2024 Fish Consumption Advisory issued annually by the Ohio Department of Health (ODH).
Most Ohio sport fish are safe to eat one meal per week, unless there is a more or less restrictive advisory outlined in the Ohio Sport Fish Consumption Advisory. ODH advises this general statewide advisory due to low level mercury contamination.

Commentary: Turkey hunting as much about the process as it is about the bird

I was first struck with the idea that hunting turkeys would be an enjoyable pastime when a newly introduced fellow quietly sat down with our small group in a poorly lit bar.
He pushed photos of himself posing with a long beard and a bottle of celebratory “Wild Turkey” bourbon. The story he told was fascinating as it painted a vivid picture of his scouting trips. The morning opener had brought along a lone gobble from a distant hillside, a fast-paced move to get closer, and then a slower creep to gain a hidden position on the bird.

An inside look at Michigan’s wolf controversy: Part 2

Michigan residents are asking a lot of questions about wolf management. Let’s try to answer a few of them.
Question: What are the chances today of allowing a future wolf hunt?
Answer: The question needs a followup: Administratively or judiciously? State and federal natural resources agencies have seen no scientific reason to keep the gray wolf on the endangered species list, only to have their conclusions overturned by judges.

Beware of contamination in morel mushrooms

Prized globally for their taste, and elusiveness, the morel mushroom family comprises many different species, all identified by honeycombed caps and hollow bodies.
Equally appealing is this fungi’s adept ability to remain overlooked in crumpled-up leaf litter each spring. So highly preferred are these mushrooms, they are considered a delicacy in many countries, including the U.S. Here in Pennsylvania, mushroom hunters are lucky to live in prime morel habitat, inspiring a barrage of “shroomers” to get into the woods in search of them.
