Wisconsin Gov. Evers vetoes wolf-hunt bill, antlerless ban

Wisconsin’s Democratic Gov. Tony Evers vetoed 41 bills passed by the Republican-led Legislature on March 29 – rejecting a $3 billion Republican tax cut, political loyalty pledges for higher education employees, and a plan setting how many wolves may be hunted each year.
During more than five years as governor with a Republican-controlled Legislature, Evers has vetoed more bills than any governor in Wisconsin history.

Minnesota trout opener creates buzz in the southeast

When you live in southeastern Minnesota, it’s common knowledge that the weekend of the stream-trout opener is not the most opportune time to get groceries, let alone have a quiet burger and beer at one of the region’s local restaurants or taverns.
“It’s the one time of year where we can get really busy,” Vaughn Snook, Minnesota DNR assistant area fisheries supervisor in Lanesboro, said of the region’s signature towns, including Preston, Chatfield, and others. “You’ll see plenty of anglers going to get something to eat or drink with their waders on.”

Streams of Thought: Minnesota bills to bark at for licensed commercial dog, cat breeders

Hunters seeking their next bird dogs are among the most discerning of shoppers – right up there with those who spend countless hours evaluating the breeding information of their next show dogs.
We hunters take our dog purchases seriously, and rightly so. After all, we’re about to buy pups that we’ll depend on for perhaps the next 10 years or more afield, and we’re looking for a dog that’s a joy in the home, during the off-season, as well.

When passing through Hackensack, don’t bypass Birch Lake in Minnesota’s Cass County

Cass County’s Birch Lake is located just off the main drag in downtown Hackensack. Despite being located in town and featuring an excellent city-owned public access, the 1,267-acre lake is not extremely pressured from a fishing standpoint.
Birch hosts quality panfish and largemouth bass, along with decent numbers of walleyes. But it doesn’t seem to receive the attention one might think it would.
