Death of sperm whale off Florida coast could provide clues to help species

People in southwestern Florida recently were given a rare opportunity to see nature in its rawest form when a 44-foot-long sperm whale became stranded on a sand bar 50 feet offshore along the Venice coastline March 10.
Strong westerly winds and accompanying heavy surf pushed the massive animal toward the shore, and when it encountered the sand bar, the visibly struggling whale was unable to move in any direction.

Notes off a soiled cuff: Hat tip to Pennsylvania reader who disagrees

Every now and then, I like to tip my hat to a reader, especially one who cleverly disagrees with me. This issue, the nod goes to Theodore Hildabrand, of Eighty Four, Pa.
He doesn’t like it that Bryan Burhans, Game Commission executive director, has been roughed up lately by state senators about his agency’s explosive growth in spending and the hiring of a lobbying firm. And he really didn’t like our reporting on the issues.

Big money up for grabs during the 42nd Annual Walleye Weekend on Iowa Great Lakes

Each year the Iowa Great Lakes Area kicks off the walleye season with the Iowa Great Lakes Area Walleye Weekend tournament put on by the Iowa Great Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce. This year’s tournament begins at midnight on Saturday, May 4, and ends at 11:59 a.m. on Sunday, May 5.
This is the 42nd annual event, and to help celebrate the event, 10 tagged walleyes have been released into the Iowa Great Lakes chain of lakes with the grand prize for catching one of these tagged walleyes this year set at $42,000.

Nevada plans state’s first moose hunt as unusual southern expansion defies climate change

In what will be a tiny big-game hunt for some of the largest animals in North America, Nevada is planning its first-ever moose hunting season this fall.
Wildlife managers say explosive growth in Nevada moose numbers over the past five years, increasing to a population of more than 100, justifies the handful of harvests planned. Scientists say the experiment of sorts should also provide a real-time peek at how the complexities of climate change affect wildlife, and why these majestic mammals the size of a horse have unexpectedly expanded their range into warmer territory.

Streams of Thought: Questions being asked about Mille Lacs regulations … and rightfully so

Someday maybe we’ll know what goes on behind the door of the “technical committee” room where state DNR fisheries officials meet in secrecy with tribal counterparts to determine, after hours of data sharing and alleged negotiating, what the rules will be for Lake Mille Lacs walleye anglers. But I doubt it.
That the general public (and reporters) is barred from the whirlwind co-management session – the products of which affect anglers, resorters, local businesses, and others – has long drawn the ire of regular folks.

Expanded use of trail cameras making a big difference for Michigan wildlife researchers

After about two decades using trail cameras to supplement wildlife studies in the Upper Peninsula, the Michigan DNR is leveraging artificial intelligence to take research to the next level.
Following a test run in 2022, the DNR is deploying a new method of estimating wolf and deer abundance with 1,200 trail cameras distributed across the UP that will bring management benefits for other species, as well.

Minnesota DNR creates two positions to enhance tribal outreach efforts

In an attempt to improve communications with tribal governments across Minnesota, the state DNR has created two new positions and is now seeking applicants for an Ojibwe relations liaison and a Dakota relations liaison.
The closing date to apply for the positions is April 1, and the salary range for both is from $64,000 to $94,000 annually. The people selected for the positions will report to the current tribal liaison, Brad Harrington, who’s title will change to director of tribal relations, according to the DNR’s response to an Outdoor News inquiry.
