Iowa fertilizer spill in Montgomery County killed more than 749,000 fish

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) announced on Thursday that the fertilizer spill near Red Oak in Montgomery County, Iowa, earlier this month killed nearly all the fish in an almost 50-mile stretch of the East Nishnabotna River to the Missouri border.
On March 11, NEW Cooperative, Inc. in Red Oak notified the Iowa DNR of a release occurring on-site. Approximately 1,500 tons (265,000 gallons) of liquid nitrogen fertilizer (32% solution) discharged into a drainage ditch, then into the East Nishnabotna River. The release occurred due to an aboveground storage tank valve left open for the weekend.

New York bill would allow kids to begin hunting with a mentor at age 10

New York State Assemblyman Robert Smullen (R,C-Mohawk Valley and the Adirondacks, D-118) has introduced legislation that, if passed, would change significantly the ability of young people to get started at hunting, including possessing a firearm when afield.
Smullen’s legislation (A.9424/S.8737) is called the Apprentice Hunting Bill and, if passed, “Allows a person who is at least 10 years of age to hunt small game, fowl, deer or bear during applicable seasons without obtaining a hunting license or hunter’s education course certification, and to possess or control a firearm if the person is within arm’s reach of a qualified hunting mentor.”

Mike Schoonveld: Federal funding, or lack thereof, has hindered development of wind energy projects on the Great Lakes

A report released by the Dept. of Energy in 2014 was supposed to be the green flag for a race to establish wind energy projects on the Great Lakes.
If that’s the case why, after a decade, aren’t there any wind farms established or being built in the Great Lakes? It shows that even with government backing, most developers are smart enough to realize such projects would be more boondoggle than boom.
