Ask a fisheries biologist: Diet overlap among game fish

The diet of predatory fish is always a topic of interest for anglers, though for varying reasons. Anglers chasing muskies might want to understand the fish’s diet to better target it with their presentations. Other anglers might have concerns about predatory fish eating too many of the other fish they want to target, such as panfish and trout, etc.

432 sturgeon weighed in despite poor ice during Wisconsin spearing season

Sturgeon spearers on the Lake Winnebago system proved to be resilient and resourceful during a season with the worst ice conditions in memory.
Warm weather, rain, and high winds the week before the opener on Saturday, Feb. 10, had some folks predicting the season would be a total loss and nobody would even be able to venture onto the ice, let alone get a good look at a sturgeon. Conditions were certainly unfavorable, but some hardy guys and gals persevered every day of the season that ended Feb. 25.

Study shows Adirondack trout pond oxygen levels are dropping

Trout and salmon in the Adirondacks have endured acid rain, overfishing, development and many other threats over the past century, but a new study has concluded that changing weather and aftereffects of acid rain are resulting in a drop of oxygen levels and “browning” of waters that may make many waters inhospitable for trout and salmon.

Michigan groups seek answers to deer management issues

Michigan Department of Natural Resources wildlife officials are not throwing up their hands and surrendering to the problems associated with deer management in Michigan; rather, they’re embarking on a new quest to get to the bottom of things.
“Right now, the discussion is going outside of the DNR,” said Chad Stewart, the DNR’s deer specialist. “Let’s get a group of people together who view deer management though diverse lenses. Let’s talk about what these challenges are and put our heads together and think about ways to improve deer management in the best interest of the deer resource.”
