Efforts to reintroduce elk to northeastern Minnesota have stalled despite years of planning and millions of dollars in state funding, as discussions continue among the Minnesota DNR, the Red Lake Band, and the Fond du Lac Band.
A 2023 legislative appropriation provided $2.3 million for elk relocation efforts through the Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund. Of that amount, the DNR received $300,000, while $2 million was allocated to the Fond du Lac Band to prepare for the arrival of elk in the region.
