Wisconsin’s sturgeon spearing opener severely hampered by weather

Unseasonable warm weather, rain, and high winds combined to create the worst ice conditions in memory for the sturgeon spearing season that opened Feb. 10 on Wisconsin’s Lake Winnebago and the upriver lakes Poygan, Winneconne, and Butte des Morts.
DNR Warden Supervisor Christopher Shea said the spearing effort on opening weekend was around 10% to 15% of that in a normal season.

Minnesota’s Mille Lacs Lake sees 10% decrease in total harvest quota

The Mille Lacs Lake fisheries advisory committee (MLFAC) met on Tuesday, Feb. 15, to discuss open water regulations for the lake and 2024’s allowable walleye harvest level. That level is down from last year.
The new safe allowable walleye harvest for state anglers and the Ojibwe bands is 157,500 pounds, down 10% from last year’s 175,000 pounds. Of that total, the state’s allocation is down from 100,300 pounds last year to 91,500 pounds this upcoming year, a 9% decrease.

Sharptail grouse society leaves Wisconsin Wildlife Federation over dog training legislation

A bill moving through the Wisconsin Assembly and Senate has created turmoil between conservation groups that usually partner toward common goals.
Assembly Bill 512 and the Senate companion bill – SB 545 – would repeal a DNR administrative code that generally prohibits a person from hunting or pursuing any free-roaming wild animal with the aid of a dog from May 1 to June 30 in parts of the north.

Ask a fisheries biologist: Research illustrates the futility of trying to release bow-shot fish

Bowfishing is a popular practice, with at least some legal opportunities in all 50 states.
Unlike hook-and-line angling, bowfishing does not lend itself to the release of fish. The practice of attempting to release a fish shot by bow is not legal in most states, including Wisconsin, and recent research illustrates the futility of trying to release bow-shot fish.

New York DEC projects duck hunting season dates for 2024-27

Barring potential changes at the Federal level, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation recently announced duck hunting season dates for the 2024-2025 through 2026-2027 waterfowl hunting seasons.
To select the season dates in each zone that may work best for most hunters, DEC needed to understand what is important to hunters and pair those values with actual data on duck abundance, migration, and recent weather patterns.

New York hunters, anglers, trappers get added flexibility for purchasing licenses

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation recently announced that beginning with the 2024-25 sporting license year, the paper used for state sporting licenses and carcass tags will change from special stock synthetic paper to plain paper.
Also, DEC will allow hunters, trappers, and anglers to print their licenses and tags from home, including carcass tags for deer, bear and wild turkeys.

Mike Raykovicz: A little maintenance to gear ends another memorable hunting season

Here it is the middle of February and I’m just getting around to putting away my hunting gear until next season. I know there are rabbits, grouse, hares, and even squirrels to hunt until the end of the month in New York but for this hunter, the season is over.
I used to enjoy hunting late-season rabbits with a friend whose beagle, Rex, loved to hunt as much as we did. Time marches on, however, and after Rex died we never hunted rabbits again.
