Researchers looking for insight into Iowa’s wild turkey population decline

The reintroduction of wild turkeys to Iowa’s landscape has been celebrated as a conservation success story for the past 25 years. But Iowa’s turkey population is showing troubling signs: the numbers are down, nests are failing and fewer poults are surviving.
It’s not just an Iowa problem – turkey populations are declining in many states in the Midwest and across the eastern half of the United States. A group of midwestern states met in North Dakota in 2023 to discuss turkey population concerns and projects that are planned and underway.

Will North Dakota fishing stay hot in 2024 after what was called a record-breaking 2023 open-water season?

The open water fishing in North Dakota in 2023 was record breaking according to Greg Power, fisheries division chief, and hard water anglers were eager to see if the winter fishing would stay hot.
“It was incredible how many calls we got … a lot of positive things were said about the walleye fishing in North Dakota in 2023,” Power said. “And it wasn’t any one water.”

Commentary: Doggone it, everybody needs a ‘Buck’ in their lives

Golden retrievers have been a part of my life since the mid 90s when Buck entered our lives.
I had no intention of bringing a dog into our household at that time. In addition to a pair of daughters, our family included fish, birds, gerbils, cats, and a rabbit at that time. In fact, at one point I threatened to move out if we adopted another animal.

The right timing is key for winter bluegills where good ice is fleeting

For most of the Frozen Chozen last year wasn’t a particularly great ice fishing season in the northeast. Mother Nature took care of that with above normal temperatures just when the ice should have been getting thicker.
So when we do get out this season there is bound to be some anxious moments and some mistakes made. Fortunately bluegills are pretty tolerant fish but even gills get antsy and shy away from grievous errors.
