12.54-pound walleye wins Fall Brawl and Slam on Lake Erie

A night fishing trip off the shores of Cleveland on Nov. 24 landed an angler from Olmsted Township a monster walleye – along with it two fishing boats.
Ryan Smith and his fishing buddy, David Ward, had put Ward’s boat in at Edgewater Park and were trolling offshore when Smith landed a 12.54-pound, 29.5-inch walleye that won the Walleye Fall Brawl and the Walleye Fall Slam.

Ohio’s deer gun hunters were largely successful in 2023

Many deer hunters in Ohio laughed in the face of weather adversity during the statewide firearms season and still did better than just pretty well.

They came within 1.5% of the three-year average for the season and were off only 1,814 animals over the 2022 week-long firearms deer-hunting season. In all, “gun” deer hunters in Ohio shot 70,118 animals Nov. 27 through Dec. 3.

Looking back on the evolution of ice fishing augers: “You really did that?”

As I wait impatiently for first ice here in northwest Iowa, I think back to the changes that have taken place over the past 65-plus years that I have ice fished. Those of you who are my age (75) will probably remember these different stages, while younger anglers will probably just shake their head and ask, “You really did that?”

Knocking on doors pays off in huge buck for Ohio bowhunter Zach Kemper

You have to knock on a lot of doors in order to get a place to hunt deer on private property in Ohio.
Zach Kemper, of Osgood in Darke County, took that to heart. Kemper, 21, knocked on no less than 40 doors in Shelby County before securing permission to hunt a private piece of land. Kemper’s unwavering efforts paid off in a buck of a lifetime, a 19-point animal that green-scored 216 5/8.

Commentary: Delta Waterfowl initiative aims to work with farmers to keep at-risk wetlands producing ducks in Canada

The Canadian prairie continues to lose its allure to breeding ducks. But Delta Waterfowl is working to expand the organization’s habitat conservation programs that provide farmers with annual incentive payments to retain the region’s critical shallow wetlands where ducks can breed, nest, and thrive.
