Donations allow Iowa DNR to complete wildlife tracking system to monitor migration

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources has received two $60,000 donations that will allow it to complete its Motus Wildlife Tracking System Network across the state within the next five years.
The Motus Wildlife Tracking System is a network of coordinated automated radio telemetry stations used to track long-distance movements of small animals. It began in 2013 by Birds Canada, near Toronto.

Will a buck shot by Ohio hunter this season become the new state record typical?

Word on the street around here is that there could be a new Ohio record typical buck come deer season’s end in 2024.

According to news reports, Christopher “C.J.” Alexander on Nov. 9 shot a buck in Clinton County that had a gross green score of 235 7/8, which is about five inches better than the current Ohio typical record book buck. The dilemma lies in whether Alexander’s buck will be ultimately scored as a typical or a non-typical after the mandatory 60-day drying period.

A year-end reflection on loss, love, and the legacy of outdoor connections

As Winter Solstice nears along with the end of the year, I seem to always become more introspective. It’s as if this particular season serves as a poignant juncture for said introspection, particularly when contemplating the losses endured and the cherished relationships that have ended.
Many of those losses include special mentors and friends with whom I’ve shared many an outdoor adventure. It’s especially true this year after we recently lost a lower Kaskaskia legend, Ron “Jolly” Joellenbeck.

Tragic death of Pennsylvania hunter in tree-stand fire is a lesson for others

The sad news that a Pennsylvania deer hunter burned to death in his treestand recently was carried by media outlets across the country.
The sad story “had legs” as news professionals sometimes say, because the terrible tragedy resonated with so many deer hunters across colder climates who have used propane heaters to warm shooting huts. The hunter died Nov. 25 in Fulton County after his treestand caught fire and he couldn’t escape the flames, on the opening morning of deer season.

Snow, cats, tire tracks: Unwelcome excitement on unmaintained mountain road at night

If you’ve never experienced one of those white-knuckle, heart-pounding, “say a prayer” driving situations at any point in your life, consider yourself among the lucky ones.
One such occasion, which potentially shaved a few years off my life for the stress of it all, occurred last winter right around the holidays. The week before Christmas, my son and I had traveled about 30 minutes from our home to set bobcat traps along a remote section of the Blue Mountain accessible only by a dirt road, which received no winter maintenance and offered limited cell phone reception.
