Bluebill Lake in Iowa’s Cerro Gordo County is a small body of water that offers anglers an opportunity at panfish, bass and catfish. 
At 40 acres and a maximum depth of a little less than 20 feet, the lake four miles southeast of Clear Lake features populations of black crappie, bluegill, channel catfish, yellow perch and largemouth bass.

Prosecutors charge Michigan conservation officer in campground shooting

Prosecutors have charged a Michigan conservation officer in connection with a campground shooting that left one person wounded.
Ryan Cox, 22, was charged last week in Mecosta County with one count of felony assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder and a firearm violation, according to a news release from the state attorney general’s office. Both charges are felonies. The assault count carries a maximum 10-year prison term.

Three Iowa land purchases add nearly 50 acres for recreation use

The Iowa Natural Resources Commission approved the purchase of three properties, with one of the purchases receiving special attention at the commission’s Thursday meeting at the Wallace Building in Des Moines.
The parcel receiving added attention involved 31 acres of nearly level to gently-sloping land adjacent to the Perkins Marsh Wildlife Management Area (WMA) in Palo Alto County. Its appraised value is $332,100 and the commission agreed to pay $330,000 for the property.

Michigan 15-year-old shoots new state-record buck in youth nontypical division

Fifteen-year-old Dylan Meyer from Zeeland, Mich., shot a 20-point nontypical buck in Ottawa County on Sept. 10, the second day of the 2023 youth deer hunt, that is now the state record in the youth category for nontypicals. 
The huge set of antlers have a gross score of 211-6/8 and net 206-1/8, according Commemorative Bucks of Michigan measurer Allen Wilde. The previous number one nontypical in the youth category was a 29-pointer that Michael Derosa shot in VanBuren County during the firearms season 1989 on his first morning ever of deer hunting.

Preliminary estimates show 11.8% decline in Michigan’s 2023 deer harvest, led by steep decline in U.P.

Preliminary data from the Michigan DNR shows the 2023 state white-tailed deer harvest is down significantly, though the reasons why may not become clear until next year. 
With roughly 85% to 90% of expected deer registrations in through Dec. 8, the total statewide harvest was down 11.8% compared to the same time last year, Chad Stewart, the DNR’s deer and elk manager, told Michigan Outdoor News.
