How much will use of rifles during Illinois’ deer season impact participation, harvest?

How use of single-shot rifles will affect harvest during this year’s Illinois firearms deer season remains the big unknown, as does how it impacted harvest numbers during the October statewide youth hunt.
A month later, DNR has yet to report on the youth harvest. This was the first year rifles were allowed. The regular firearms season, which runs Nov. 17-19, also will allow rifles, the result of a new state law that went into effect Jan. 1.

DEC encourages antlerless deer harvest, safety as New York’s Southern Zone hunters start Nov. 18

New York’s busiest hunting days are just about here, as the Southern Zone rifle opening day for white-tailed deer is Saturday, Nov. 18. The early days of this season is when more hunters take to the fields and forests of New York’s southern tier than on any other hunting days.
And in the days leading up to the Southern Zone opener, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has been encouraging hunters to go afield safely, and asking them to help out with deer management – in some areas – by harvesting more antlerless deer.

Commercial lake trout report on Lake Michigan scrutinized

The Wisconsin Natural Resources Board (NRB) heard a report on Lake Michigan lake trout at its Oct. 25 meeting, indicating the population is increasing in some parts of the lake, though it’s still too early to know if a commercial lake trout fishery can be opened.
Lake trout in Lake Michigan declined severely during the 1950s, primarily due to the introduction of sea lamprey through the Saint Lawrence Seaway and over-fishing.

Wisconsin’s Northern Forest Zone deer kill is well off ’22

With archery buck kill declines ranging from 16% to 31% below last year as of Nov. 6, Wisconsin hunters in 12 of the state’s 19 Northern Forest Zone counties will likely see that trend continue when the gun deer season opens Saturday, Nov. 18.
In four of the remaining seven Northern Forest Zone counties, the archery buck kill dropped 5% to 10% during the same time.
