Minnesota Governor’s Deer Opener is set to offer opportunities in Lanesboro

The Minnesota Governor’s Deer Hunting Opener takes place in Lanesboro, Nov. 3-4, to kick off a tradition for Minnesotans across the state. It’s the start to a nine- or 16-day firearms deer-hunting season.
The Governor’s Deer Hunting Opener has faced several changes during the past 12 months, but it’s ultimately maintaining a similar path. That direction will focus on recruiting younger hunters and making citizens aware of the conservation aspects of hunting and fishing.

Commentary: For Minnesota’s Ash River, Voyageurs park, is cleanup plan worth the price?

The St. Louis County Board has thrown its backing to a state bonding request for a $24 million project to address a problem that supporters can’t show even exists.
At issue is a proposal by the Voyageurs National Park Clean Water Joint Powers Board, which goes by the cumbersome acronym VNPCWJPB, to build a centralized wastewater collection and treatment system to serve a total of 81 sites along the Ash River, a tributary to Lake Kabetogama.

Outdoor Insights: Early deer harvest numbers trending lower so far in Minnesota

Joining me on last weekend’s Outdoor News Radio show and podcast, Barb Keller, the DNR’s big-game program leader, said she doesn’t expect Minnesota’s deer kill this year to exceed 2022’s. Whitetail hunters a year ago took 172,000 deer across all seasons for a 32% success rate, and Keller said lower deer numbers in northern Minnesota likely will keep statewide harvest lower again in 2023. Central and southern hunters could help by hunting hard and killing multiple deer, but overall, Keller expects a kill similar to 2022 and maybe even slightly lower.

A conservation collaboration aims to better understand the population decline of northern pintails

In the serene wetlands and sweeping grasslands of North Dakota, an iconic waterfowl species takes flight – the northern pintail. These charming dabbling ducks were once one of the most abundant duck species in North America.
While waterfowl as a group have actually increased in population size, a few species, including the pintail, have seen population declines since the 1950s. So, to address a “bird of management concern,” a collaboration in the Central Flyway has emerged to unravel the mysteries about their migration, where they breed, and where they winter, to help inform not only our basic understanding of pintails, but also our management actions in both conservation delivery and harvest management.
