Northern Minnesota’s Stu Osthoff says timing is key to fishing success in canoe country

Stu Osthoff has been fishing Minnesota’s canoe country for 50 years. He still goes out every summer, still guides 10-day wilderness trips, and still gets a little bothered when someone drifts a line while paddling.
“That’s not fishing,” he says. “That’s wishing.” Osthoff, 69, is publisher and editor of the Boundary Waters Journal and runs what he calls his Grand Slam Guide Service, leading clients deep into the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness and Ontario’s Quetico Provincial Park in pursuit of four species: smallmouth bass, walleye, lake trout, and northern pike.

Commentary: Report breaks down billion-dollar impact of outdoor recreation in Minnesota

Outdoor recreation is a huge economic driver in Minnesota, contributing $13.5 billion in gross domestic product, $23.5 billion in economic output, and supporting more than 96,000 jobs.
That’s the top-line take-away from a new study issued in September by the state’s Outdoor Recreation Industry Partnership, which provided what may well be the most detailed look at the economic impact of outdoor recreation in state history.

Trump order makes mining a top priority for federal lands, potentially restarting push near Minnesota’s Boundary Waters

A March 20 executive order signed by President Donald Trump establishes mining of minerals as the highest-priority use of federal lands, and that could eventually lead to mining operations within federal wilderness areas and even national parks.
Combined with Trump’s Jan. 20 order declaring a national energy emergency, his latest order appears to set the stage for an unprecedented push to advance mining projects on federal lands with only perfunctory environmental review.

Superior National Forest’s bear order appears to be reducing conflicts

This past year in northern Minnesota brought plenty of weather extremes, from a record mild winter to record June rain, followed by a worsening drought. Such conditions made it a tough one for the region’s bear population, which relies heavily on natural foods that rarely produce well under extreme conditions.
The limited natural foods prompted a sharp increase in bear nuisance reports across northern Minnesota – except for within the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, where a new wilderness-wide order designed to reduce human-bear interactions may have helped keep this longstanding problem in check.

Commentary: North Dakota study shows effects of winter without wolves on whitetails

The Timberjay has received considerable comment this fall in response to a two-part series examining the causes of the decline in the deer population in our (northeastern Minnesota) region. I was surprised that it was mostly positive, because I recognized that the stories I wrote were challenging some pretty deeply-entrenched views.
The one major factor that I did not address in the series was the effect of winter on deer, which I believe indisputably is the single-most critical factor in white-tailed deer survival in our area.

Minnesota exhibit in Ely takes viewers deep into Voyageurs wolf study

Making scientific concepts and findings accessible to a general audience has long been a challenge for researchers. Most scientific journals have little readership outside academia, and the articles that appear in them are rarely written to be accessible to anyone outside a particular field of study.
The researchers involved with the Voyageurs Wolf Project in Minnesota have done far more than most in recent years to build broad public awareness of some of their novel findings about wolf behavior in and around Voyageurs National Park. And now they’re collaborating with the International Wolf Center and a graphic designer to present a new exhibit that provides a unique perspective on their ongoing studies.
