Run them down: Pursuing flocks of turkeys is an enjoyable fall challenge

With the Pennsylvania Game Commission enacting more restrictive rules governing the autumn turkey hunting season in an effort to reduce the number of birds taken during the fall, turkey hunters have to make the most of the time they have to hunt.
Some wildlife management units have seen their fall season reduced to two weeks – or just one. It is pretty much shotguns and bows only, too. To be successful with these new policies in force, a hunter has to do several things to maximize his chances for success.

Disabled hunters enjoying New York’s crossbow option as over 2,800 permits are issued

When John Brosen first heard that he might be able to hunt during New York’s archery season with a crossbow via a special permit, he didn’t envision it happening this season. But within days, hours actually, of expediting the process of obtaining the paperwork and meeting with his doctor, the retired National Grid lineman from Kinderhook, in Columbia County, who has two bad shoulders, had what he needed.
“I got it within 24 hours of submitting it,” Brosen said. “I looked into it and when I talked to my surgeon he filled out the paperwork and I had it in 24 hours. I wasn’t expecting to get it in time; for next year maybe.”

Report from onX shines light on important but fragile private-lands access programs

Privately-owned land that’s open to public hunting is an important part of creating more access opportunities across the country, but the programs that connect landowners and hunters often are in various stages of fragility.

Reason for optimism heading into Minnesota’s 2023 trapping season?

During the past couple of months, the focus has been on hunting seasons across Minnesota. But at the end of October, most of the trapping seasons kick off with many factors influencing success.
Bert Highland, Minnesota Trappers Association vice president, said factors like weather and fur prices will determine whether the trapping season is successful.
“It is dependent on fur prices for a lot of people,” Highland said. “Limiting factors, I would say the number one, I guess even greater than fur prices, is weather. If we get an early freeze, that curtails a lot of the trapping activity. People just don’t want to deal with the snow and the ice.”

Otsego Schools to benefit from H2Ohio project

Frogs, snakes, and crayfish are already returning to the northwest Ohio wetland newly restored under the H2Ohio Initiative. They were probably well-camouflaged when the Ohio DNR (ODNR) joined the Black Swamp Conservancy and Otsego Local School District representatives for the ribbon-cutting ceremony in early October.
The project took 16 acres of previously farmed land and restored it to woodland and wetland habitat. The Otsego School will use the site for cross-curricular activities, and the school’s FFA program will use an onsite farm plot to demonstrate the value of using natural habitats to filter agricultural runoff.

Commentary: Time to re-examine the concept of fair chase

Most of us are familiar with “fair chase,” the honor code North American hunters have followed for roughly a century. Coined by the Boone and Crockett Club (BCC) in 1888, the concept describes an ethical code originally applied to big game hunting.
It requires that the targeted animal be both wild and free ranging, with a fair chance of escape. As an aside, the BCC was especially concerned with the water-killing of deer (driving deer into lakes where hunters in boats would shoot, club, or spear them). Article 10 of the BCC constitution states that the killing of swimming (big) game was grounds for membership suspension or cancellation.

Four new Wisconsin Natural Resource Board members help pass DNR wolf plan

A Wisconsin Natural Resources Board (NRB) with four new members approved the DNR’s 2023 wolf management plan after hearing comments from 46 citizens and receiving written comments from hundreds of others.
Controversy over the plan was evident by the dozens of people who spoke for and against the plan. Corky Meyer, of Kewaskum, during the public testimony period summarized it this way: “The plan is like a gem – it has many facets and everyone has their own point of view.”
