New research by Illinois Natural History Survey biologist shows rattlesnakes are social

A conservation biologist at the Illinois Natural History Survey spent time analyzing rattlesnakes as part of a new study into the social lives of rattlesnakes.
Turns out, most appear to have one. Researchers, including INHS’ Mark Davis, a co-author of a new study on the topic, found rattlesnakes form social groups, called nodes in network theory, that they frequently interact within.

Even with state mallard numbers down, duck hunters remain eager

Technically, the 2023-24 waterfowl hunting season is already under way in Illinois.
The early Canada goose season and the September teal season have already passed, but the seasons begin in earnest when goose and duck seasons open in the North Zone Oct. 21, the Central Zone Oct. 28, the South Central Zone Nov. 11, and the South Zone Dec. 2. Since Illinois is in the third year of the five-year cycle, there were no major changes in regulations. While Illinois maintains liberal hunting regulations, this could be a difficult season based on overall duck numbers.

Plenty can be accomplished when all come together for the outdoors

As I spent three hours about six weeks ago at the Howard K. Vincent Waterfowl Production Area dedication, located north across the road from Big Spirit Lake, I felt a sense of immense satisfaction that this huge project included so many groups and individuals that had all come together for this one special evening celebration. I observed folks from all walks of life come together for something that will positively impact the entire area.

Discussion regarding wolf damage payments, social carrying capacity dominate meeting in Marshfield, Wis.

Questions regarding the wolf damage payment fund, social carrying capacity and a population goal carried the evening during a DNR open house meeting on the topic in Marshfield, Wis.
The DNR also set up an open house meeting in Ashland, with both meetings following the Sept. 27 Natural Resources Board (NRB) meeting where NRB members sounded mostly supportive of the DNR’s draft plan in their comments. The open house format does not allow for wide-open discussion in which those attending might ask questions of panel members. In an open house setting, attendees meet one-on-one with DNR personnel to ask their questions.

Wisconsin’s 2023 firearms deer season forecast: A “season of opportunity.”

Wisconsin’s 2023 firearms deer season is a month away, but hunters are already gearing up for opening weekend. Early reports from bow, crossbow, and youth hunters suggest there are plenty of deer available again this year.
The full Hunter’s Moon on Oct. 28 should help kick rutting activity into high gear, but that will benefit bowhunters more than gun hunters. The next full moon won’t show its face until Nov. 27, missing the firearms season, but coinciding with the beginning of the 10-day muzzleloader season.
