’Tis the season: Spruce top theft rises in Minnesota’s forests

During the past couple of weeks, there have been steady reports of tree top theft in the northeast part of Minnesota. As the holiday season approaches, the number of thefts typically increases, DNR officials say.
Two weeks ago, a report from DNR Conservation Officer Anthony Bermel, from the Babbitt area, indicated he seized 1,565 spruce tops and charged two people with timber trespass, decorative materials theft, and littering. This past week, DNR CO Shane Zavodnik, from the Virginia area, spent time investigating several spruce top theft cases.

Minnesota pheasant opener a mixed bag for state’s hunters

The August roadside survey gave many pheasant hunters optimism heading into this fall.
The pheasant-hunting season opened on Saturday, Oct. 14, and hunters found a mix of success across the southern region of Minnesota. Among conservation officer reports and wildlife area office sources, the common theme for the state pheasant opener was that many hunters got out, but success rates varied depending on location.
