Scientist Michael Dreslik named PRI State Biologist, permanent Illinois Natural History Survey director

Michael Dreslik, a dedicated Illinois Natural History Survey research scientist of nearly three decades, will be the survey’s next director and Illinois State Biologist at the Prairie Research Institute.
Dreslik has served as interim INHS director since January. Prior to that, he led the Urban Biotic Assessment Program and the Amphibian and Reptile Conservation Program. He has served as director of the Population and Community Ecology Lab, PaCE Lab, since 2017.

Discovery of spadefoot toad was work of Illinois, Syrian scientists

The Syrian Spadefoot Toad has been rediscovered in the war-torn country with the help of Syrian community scientists and Illinois researchers.
The finding is the result of years of dedication by Yaman Omran of the University of Aleppo and citizen scientists in a country whose recent history has been marked by conflict.

Rarely documented flying squirrel caught on camera in Illinois

A University of Illinois student researcher identified a southern flying squirrel in a university natural area. While the species is native to Illinois, this was the first time one has been documented in the area in decades, said Max Allen, an Illinois Natural History Survey wildlife ecologist.

New research by Illinois Natural History Survey biologist shows rattlesnakes are social

A conservation biologist at the Illinois Natural History Survey spent time analyzing rattlesnakes as part of a new study into the social lives of rattlesnakes.
Turns out, most appear to have one. Researchers, including INHS’ Mark Davis, a co-author of a new study on the topic, found rattlesnakes form social groups, called nodes in network theory, that they frequently interact within.
