Low-water woes, and a ‘blue’ pike from Otter Tail County, Minnesota

The low-water woes continue as we slide into late September. This low-water issue is a factor for both fishing and for duck hunting.
I had a backwater area scoped out for the early duck season, only to find it dry and unhuntable. Checking your duck areas prior to hunting is imperative this season because many sloughs, backwater areas, and river systems are as low as I have ever seen them.

Food buffet in many Minnesota lakes set for migrating ducks

The Minnesota waterfowl-hunting season opened Sept. 23, and ducks should have been enjoying a smorgasbord, because aquatic plants were extra-abundant in lakes and ponds this summer.
A number of factors contributed to impressive aquatic plant growth, including low lake water levels, June heat, and clear water. Sunlight penetration and heat are perfect ingredients for promoting plant growth. Several abundant aquatic plants observed in plant surveys I conducted this year were water celery, sago pondweed, and water stargrass.

Pro Hunting Tip of the Week: Ducks keep flaring? Fix the problem

Many times, I’ve seen ducks come back to a field to feed, lock their wings as they see the decoys, and then flare hard at about 100 yards out. We’ll see hunters get up from the center of their decoy spread and wonder what caused this reaction. Next flock, same reaction. I’m sure if you’re reading this, you’ve been there.

Detroit Lake is western Minnesota fish population center

There are three connected basins that make up Becker County’s Detroit Lake. The largest is known as Big Detroit, to its west is Little Detroit Lake, and the smallest is Curfman Lake to the southwest – or, as most people recognize it, Deadshot Bay.
Collectively, there’s more than 3,000 acres of water, and anglers fish all of Detroit Lake at different times of the year. It’s a popular year-round fishing lake, known for its excellent walleye- and muskie-fishing opportunities, along with plenty of panfish, largemouth bass, and pike to a lesser extent.

Flamingos visit Wisconsin for first time in state history as onlookers gather at Lake Michigan beach

Five flamingos that showed up in Wisconsin to wade along a Lake Michigan beach attracted a big crowd of onlookers eager to see the unusual visitors venturing far from their usual tropical setting.

The American flamingos spotted last Friday in Port Washington, about 25 miles north of Milwaukee, marked the first sighting of the species in Wisconsin state history, said Mark Korducki, a member of the Wisconsin Society for Ornithology, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported.
