Iowans say camping is their favorite outdoor activity in state fair survey

Camping is the outdoor activity of choice for Iowans.
That’s the opinion of visitors who participated in a poll Aug. 10-20 at the Iowa State Fair. The survey offered participants a chance to vote on one of nine options as part of the exhibit, “How Do You Outdoors?” Camping received the largest number, 370, or 18%, of the votes cast. Following closely behind were hiking and fishing, at 353 and 347 votes, respectively, or 17% each of the total.

Autumn rock bass: Lake Bemidji’s most misunderstood fish?

Lake Bemidji, located in northern Minnesota, has some remarkable traits and history. The Mississippi River runs both in and out of this deep, clean lake that glaciers carved 10,000 years ago. American Indians hunted around and fished this lake for centuries.
Today anglers in well-equipped fishing boats fish the 6,580-acre water body mainly for walleyes, yellow perch, and northern pike. Last week, I fished the Association of Great Lakes Outdoor Writers’ first fishing tournament on Lake Bemidji with veteran communicators Ken Perrotte and Dan Small. We fished with Dick Beardsley, a highly regarded local guide with 51 years of experience conquering fish in the region.

Despite hearing issues, the bond between these hunting partners one to be treasured

Grouse hunting is an art and the canvas is truly unique around every bend, up every knoll, and beside every stream.
This outdoor adventure usually begins the second week of September in Michigan and can be enjoyed with the companionship of a dog, with partners, or by oneself. Though I don’t have a dog as a companion anymore, I truly admire the style and picture-perfect form of pointers or setters seeking grouse.

Chance to hook a stocked rainbow trout returns Oct. 21 at several Illinois sites

In about a month – on Oct. 21 to be exact – anglers will stand along the shorelines of nearly 60 ponds, lakes, and streams throughout Illinois, anxiously watching the clock.
At the stroke of 5 a.m., lines will be cast into the water. It’s Illinois fall trout season.
“Our catchable trout program is a fun and popular family activity, and a great opportunity to introduce children to fishing,” said Mike McClelland, chief of DNR’s Division of Fisheries.

Many bowhunters apply to hunt in Pittsburgh parks after city approves pilot program

There was no shortage of applicants for a first-ever, controlled deer hunt slated for two Pittsburgh parks this fall.
Soon after city council approved the pilot, officials from the U.S. Department of Agriculture began screening the more than 100 bowhunters who reportedly are vying for an opportunity to help thin the herds in Riverview and Frick parks. The city is paying the USDA $10,000 to manage the program, which ultimately will enlist 30 qualified hunters (and 30 alternates), selected in a lottery.

Ohio State University, Ohio Division of Wildlife undertake large coyote study, and hunters and trappers can help

There is a new multi-year Ohio State University/Ohio Division of Wildlife statewide study underway that is investigating multiple aspects of coyote-livestock conflicts.
Now that hunting seasons are opening, the coyote researchers wanted to be sure to alert hunters and trappers of their project in the event that they would be willing to help them obtain samples. The overall purpose of this project is to provide practical information to minimize livestock-coyote conflict in Ohio. The project is also doing an in-depth diet analysis for coyotes across Ohio to determine what Ohio coyotes are eating.
