Michigan man cleared of killing two hunters will get $1 million

The state of Michigan has agreed to pay $1.03 million to a man who spent nearly 21 years in prison for the deaths of two hunters before the convictions were thrown out in February.
Jeff Titus, 71, qualified for compensation under the state’s wrongful conviction law, which pays $50,000 for every year behind bars. Records show Court of Claims Judge James Redford signed off on the deal on Aug. 23.

Notes off a soiled cuff: Thoughts on proposed raid on Pennsylvania’s Game Fund

Ironically, the idea to raid the Game Fund to help resolve the state’s budget impasse may have been given to state senators by the leader of the Game Commission.
A few months ago, when the commission’s Executive Director Bryan Burhans was giving the commission’s annual report to the Senate Game and Fisheries Committee, he stressed the great fiscal position the agency enjoys. That caught the attention of the panel’s chairman, Sen. Greg Rothman, R-Cumberland, Dauphin and Perry.

“The creation of more effective wetlands across the state is a key way to improve water quality for everyone in Ohio,” Gov. DeWine said. “I’m excited to see H2Ohio’s work spread into Franklin County and look forward to hearing more success stories in the future.”

NDA report: Bucks most susceptible to CWD, but does remain important part of management equation

White-tailed bucks are more susceptible to chronic wasting disease (CWD) than any other deer.
That’s the crux of a recent CWD report from the National Deer Association (NDA). CWD is an always fatal neurological disease that has cropped up over the past 20 years, ultimately making a significant change in the deer management world.

Ohio turkey research study well underway

The Ohio DNR (ODNR) Division of Wildlife and Ohio State University are partnering to conduct a multiyear study on the survival and nest success of female wild turkeys.
Ohio’s wild turkey abundance is thought to have peaked around 2001 and has fluctuated since then. Adult hen survival, nest success rates, and poult survival play a role in population levels. From 2017 to 2019, below-average hatches of turkey poults resulted in a decrease in wild turkey abundance. Hatches in 2021 and 2022 were above average.
