Star Watch: The ‘Ring of Fire’ coming Oct. 14

The big news in the heavens this month is the annular solar eclipse that will occur in the United States on Oct. 14. This event happens when our moon is between the Earth and sun but farther from us in its elliptical orbit. At this point, it only blocks the center of the sun resulting in an outer “ring of fire.”

Saugeyes, catfish top catches at Ohio’s Paulding Reservoir

It’s about as square as they come, but the 67-acre Paulding Reservoir in northwest Ohio does offer some decent fishing.
Paulding Reservoir is a typical upground water supply basin with straight riprap banks and a flat, featureless bottom except for a number of Christmas tree attractors placed by the ODNR Division of Wildlife in 1994 and 1995.
“It’s steep-sided all the way around and I don’t think there are any shallow areas,” said Mike Wilkerson, fisheries management supervisor for the Division of Wildlife in northwest Ohio.

Early muzzleloading season in New York’s Northern Zone: A perfect time to be in the woods

There is a watch on one of our Adirondack deer drives that produces a buck nearly every year, sometimes more than one. Uncharacteristically, it’s a small clearing surrounded on three sides by thick brush, which serve as pinch-points the deer will work their way through, and past the watcher/stander, when we tackle this drive.
For whatever reason, the deer are often well ahead of the drivers/pushers when we make this drive, even though these hunters are moving stealthily. Still, this makes it a perfect early-season push, including during the early muzzleloading season in the Northern Zone.

Can’t find the deer you shot? A new tracking group in southeastern Minnesota is part of a growing network

Lisa Gargulak missed the first call. She didn’t feel her smartphone vibrate in her jacket pocket.
Who could blame her? She was sitting comfortably in a deer stand, on a crisp, sun-splashed, near-perfect morning in October 2021 near Spooner, Wis.
Gargulak was hoping to arrow a deer, but, she admits, it was “a pretty quiet morning.” At 9 a.m., another call came in – and this time she felt the vibration. It was the same person who’d called earlier.

Pennsylvania groups oppose loss of $150 million from PGC Game Fund

An amendment calling for the transfer of $150 million from the Pennsylvania Game Commission coffers has sparked opposition from numerous hunting and conservation organizations.

On Aug. 30, the state Senate passed House Bill 1300 which includes an  amendment to transfer $150 million from the agency’s Game Fund to the state’s Clean Streams Fund, along with risking the Game Commission’s eligibility for Pittman-Robertson funding. If passed by the House and signed into law, the bill would also require the Game Commission to pay taxes on its 1.5 million acres of game lands – a cost the agency said would be significant.

Unified Sportsmen of Pennsylvania respond to accusations, tell what happened to funds intended for CWD research

It has been four-and-a-half years since the Unified Sportsmen of Pennsylvania held a press conference in Harrisburg announcing that the group was backing chronic wasting disease research done by Dr. Frank Bastian.
Bastian – at the time a researcher affiliated with Louisiana State University – claimed that CWD is caused by a bacterium, rather than a prion, contrary to what is believed by the vast majority of the scientific community.
