Minnesota duck hunting opener better than expected? Hunters find plentiful birds across the state

If, for some unfortunate reason, you couldn’t participate in last weekend’s traditional duck opener in Minnesota, you missed out on, as one waterfowler mused on social media, a “hunting bonanza.”
Steve Cordts, Minnesota DNR waterfowl staff specialist, said reports from wildlife managers and hunter bag checks across the state found many happy waterfowlers – even if excessively dry conditions made wetland and shallow lake access tough in many areas
“It was a very good to excellent opener for a lot of hunters,” Cordts said on Monday afternoon. “That’s my assessment based on the reports I’ve gotten.”

Outdoor Observations: Mandatory deer registration in Michigan is a simple process

With the Oct. 1 opening of Michigan’s archery deer season, hunters are reminded that they must register their deer with the DNR.
Last year was the first year of mandatory registration in Michigan, and wildlife biologists estimate that about 75% of successful hunters followed through with the registration process. COs were patient with hunters who didn’t register in 2022 during the learning curve period, but may be less flexible this fall.

Are deer suffering from ‘voluntary overcrowding?’

The North American pre-settlement population of white-tailed deer totaled somewhere between 24 million and 62 million animals, or an average of about 14.2 deer per square mile over roughly 3,011,600 square miles of estimated range. (Hanberry, B.B. and P. Hanberry. 2020: Wildlife Society Bulletin 44(3): 512-518)
Most of these animals lived on 2,007,800 square miles east of the Mississippi River. Today, there are somewhere between 11 million and 35 million whitetails, about half of the pre-settlement number. But landcover has changed dramatically, and several Midwestern states hold numbers of deer, ranging from 15 to greater than 45 deer per square mile.

Streamers and Pennsylvania trout stream comes to life for author

A natural trellis arches over this section of Cross Fork Creek, the latticework structurally formed by interlocking tree branches, mostly hemlocks but also white pine, sycamores and a few scrubby maples hardly worth mentioning.
In this case, the leafy awning was sheltering the thread of spring water. And keeping it dark. Or at least aiding in preventing my eyes from adjusting fast enough to make out the rocks and tree roots. I’d prefer more visual definition so I could let my Mickey Finn streamer shoot past and around the obstacles. And trust that the beyond or behind one of these hurdles is a wild brown trout or a native brook trout.
