Wisconsin fur farm workers try to recapture 3,000 mink that activists claim to have released

Workers at a fur farm in western Wisconsin are trying to recapture thousands of mink that were released in mid-August, apparently during a raid by animal activists, authorities said.
The Trempealeau County Sheriff’s Office said Aug. 16 that a hole was cut in a chain-link fence enclosure at Olsen Fur Farm the previous weekend, allowing about 3,000 mink to escape.

Minnesota’s open-water fishing ’23: Hot, and not in a good way

Reflecting on the 2023 open-water fishing season, I have had some interesting twists and turns and have some insights to share.
There is no doubt that hot weather has had a big effect on success since the month of May. There were 90-degree days in late May, and this continued into early June. In a nutshell, fishing really went south just after the 4th of July, which is unusual for this part of northwestern Minnesota.

Minnesota DNR stocks ‘heritage’ brook trout in state’s southeast streams

With splashes and dashes, thousands of tiny brook trout swam free in several southeastern Minnesota streams this August, representing a major milestone in a Minnesota DNR effort to restore a unique, native strain of brook trout.
“Our ability to produce these fish in our hatchery and stock them in the wild has been about 20 years in the making, and we are excited to share this historic success story,” said Melissa Wagner, Lanesboro-area fisheries supervisor. “Anglers will have the chance to catch these beautiful fish in a couple of years.”

Brood numbers up, brood size down in North Dakota heading into 2023 season

While North American duck counts are down in 2023, North Dakota offers a bright spot for duck production.
North Dakota Game and Fish Department migratory game bird biologists expect a fall flight of ducks similar to 1998, 2004, and 2020. The fall flight is anticipated to be about 23% above last year’s fall flight, based on observations from the state’s annual mid-July duck production survey.

Land transfer to Leech Lake band nears in Minnesota’s Chippewa National Forest

The Chippewa National Forest is providing a public comment opportunity regarding the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe Restoration Act’s Land Transfer Project. The act will transfer about 11,760 acres of public land currently managed by the Chippewa National Forest to the Department of the Interior’s Bureau of Indian Affairs to be held in trust for the benefit of the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe.
Michael Stansberry, forest supervisor for the Chippewa National Forest, said that of the original 11,760 acres of land, some is underwater or has access or easement issues, so the U.S. Forest Service and Leech Lake band are working together to determine what acreage is best to transfer within the Chippewa forest. He also added that the 11,760 acres will not affect hunting areas or accesses to lakes within the CNF.
