More trees getting planted through Iowa’s State Forest Nursery program

For the second consecutive year, more than 1 million seedlings were sold through Iowa’s State Forest Nursery in fiscal year (FY) 2022-23, according to a report submitted in July to the Iowa Natural Resources Commission. The report by Jeff Goerndt, state forester, reflected a slight decrease in total sales over FY 2021-22, but included a significant increase in orders.
The State Forest Nursery offers landowners affordable, high-quality native plant material for use in timber production, wildlife habitat restoration, erosion control, and other conservation-related projects. Total sales were 1,049,425 during the most recent 12-month period.  That compares with 1,077,300 one year earlier.

New York’s Reel Impact Tournament making a real impact for kids with cancer

August 4, 2023 was a special day on the lower Niagara River in New York. Not only was the fishing very good for nearly every person and boat involved (and the weather was perfect on the river), but it also raised some much-needed funds for kids with cancer through two very worthy not-for-profit organizations. If you were looking for a definition of win-win, this was it.

Attorney sticks to his waterfowl hunting roots amid Chicago’s bright lights

I grew up on the prairies of Nebraska but moved to the Windy City shortly after college to study law at the University of Illinois Chicago. While my original intention was to become a big-city lawyer, throughout my years in law school I found myself longing for home.
After I graduated, my father was diagnosed with cancer, and I decided to return to Nebraska. During this time, he made it clear that his cancer would not keep me from achieving my dreams, and he urged me to return to Chicago. I did, and this time I brought along a black Labrador pup as a kind of promise that I would continue our family traditions of hunting waterfowl and upland birds.

To save wild rice, hundreds of geese killed near Lake Superior

Kris Eilers assumed someone would reach out once the killing started.
Her instincts were spot on.
“Some people sent me photos of them capturing geese,” said Eilers, executive director of the St. Louis River Alliance. “I think people thought that they were strangling them right there.”
Officials from the Wisconsin and Minnesota departments of natural resources, along with federal officials from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, were not strangling geese in late June and early July this summer. They did, however, use carbon dioxide to suffocate the birds.

Wisconsin budget carries license fee hikes for nonresidents

Nonresidents will pay more for hunting and fishing licenses now that Wisconsin’s new 2023-25 state budget is in effect.

Residents will see no increase in license costs, but hunters, trappers, and anglers also will see few new major programs in the Department of Natural Resources’ (DNR) new budget despite the anticipated increase in license dollars from the nonresident fee increase.
The nonresident deer hunting license went from $160 to $200. Nonresidents also pay a $2 wildlife damage surcharge and a 75-cent issuing fee.

Simple fishing in complex times: Target your local river system

As a longtime angler and fishing communicator, I’ve spent a great deal of time following the major bass and walleye tournament trails. It’s a great way to see what’s working – and what’s not – on a given body of water at a given point in time.
These events often are the battlegrounds where new fishing strategies emerge, old ones get refined, and some serious fishing education goes to work. If you spend any amount of time following these trails, you’ll quickly notice that most of the talk these days revolves around forward-facing sonar. Trust me, I get it. But frankly, I’m kind of tired of it.

The story of a fishing reel like no other

After nearly going extinct, vinyl record players are making their way back into the mainstream. Vinyl isn’t just coming back, it’s here to stay. Vinyl records nearly doubled in volume, from 27.5 million albums in 2020 to 41.7 million in 2021.
Unlike vinyl records, Victrola motors, used in older vinyl record players, are a rarity. Lake trout and walleye fishermen like Mark Clemente and Dave Kohler, both of Gloversville, have replaced their rods and reels with converted Victrola motors that they have modified for their use.
