Here’s how the 2023 legislative session impacted game and fish laws in North Dakota

It’s hard to forget this past winter in North Dakota and its impact on fish, wildlife, hunters and anglers. While the recovery will slowly meld into the coming fall seasons, it’s important to realize the influence down the road.
In similar fashion, the state’s legislative session, which wrapped up around the same time the ice and snow was finally giving way to spring, passed bills that will change how you spend your time outdoors from now into the future.

Iowa fish and wildlife adapt to periodic drought conditions

Water shortages can affect animals and fish in the short-term, but most will adapt to the lack of moisture in the long-term, according to Iowa’s hydrologist as well as a technician who has studied the topic.
Lower rainfall impacts stream flow, with recent corresponding drops in levels affecting fish, said Tim Hall, hydrology resources coordinator. And with the droppages come an increase in water temperatures, which causes stress on fish.

Sporting license sales under way in New York; rifle hunting allowed in Onondaga County

Sporting licenses in New York officially went on sale Aug. 3, just days after hunters were able to begin applying for Deer Management Permits on Aug. 1.
One change that recently occurred that will not be reflected in the new regulations guide is the fact that Onondaga County hunters will be able to use centerfire rifles, rather than shotguns, for big game hunting beginning this year.

Doves, teal, goose openers on Sept. 1 in Wisconsin: What can hunters expect this year?

It’s time to get the shotguns oiled, decoys dusted off and shell vests filled. Three of Wisconsin’s earliest fall hunting seasons open Sept. 1 for early goose, early teal, and mourning doves.
Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Migratory Game Bird Ecologist Taylor Finger said Wisconsin had excellent nesting conditions going into spring, but the brood rearing period for ducks and geese was unusually dry.
“I do believe that it may have had an impact on species like teal, mallards and wood ducks,” Finger said.

Remembering former Outdoor News Field Editor and Points North columnist Shawn Perich

Sad news reached the Outdoor News office last week when we learned that Shawn Perich, who wrote for this publication as a field editor and columnist for years, died last Thursday, Aug. 3 at age 64.
One of the reasons I joined this business in 1997 was the opportunity to work with writers like Shawn Perich and Tony Dean. Reality was a little different for this then 27-year-old who found himself attempting to assign stories to a hard-headed field editor from the edge of the Boundary Waters. We argued a bit but eventually reached mutual respect and a deep friendship because of our common focus on conservation.

Archery, hunter-ed programs threatened by removal of federal funding

Sporting groups across the U.S. are heavily criticizing the Biden Administration following a July 31 report that the president and Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona intend to remove federal funding for hunter education and archery programs in public schools.
The de-funding stems from the administration’s interpretation of language in the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act (BSCA) – a law passed by Congress and signed by Biden in 2022 following mass shootings in Buffalo and Uvalde, Texas. The BSCA includes language prohibiting funding from providing “training in the use of a dangerous weapon.”
