Remembering Rick McDermott, a man of many hats in New York’s sporting community

The passing of Rick McDermott, founder and president of the New York Crossbow Coalition, and wearer of many hats in the sporting community – once again reminds so many of us how short and fragile life can be.
Although I had met Rick previously at a sports show and communicated with him regularly, we finally spent some quality time chatting at a NYS Outdoor Writers event in Pulaski, his hometown, in 2018. It was obvious how serious he was with his advocacy pertaining to crossbows.

New York DEC lands pheasants for fall hunt despite loss of flock at Reynolds Game Farm in March

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation recently announced that the fall 2023 pheasant season will proceed as planned.

After the loss of the pheasant flock at DEC’s Reynolds Game Farm earlier this year due to an outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), DEC is acquiring ring-necked pheasants from a commercial hatchery to supplement fall upland bird hunting opportunities around the state.

New York Legislature passes bill banning coyote hunting contests

The New York State Assembly has passed legislation that primarily bans coyote hunting contests, which are popular in agricultural areas across the state.
During the later part of a recall of the state Assembly, which took place on June 20 and 21, the house passed Assembly Bill A2917, which, if signed by Gov. Kathy Hochul, will “make it unlawful for any person to organize, sponsor, conduct, promote or participate in any contest, competition, tournament, or derby with the objective of taking or hunting wildlife for prizes for other inducement, or for entertainment.” Language in the bill says that it does not include contests for hunting white-tailed deer, turkey, bear, or fishing contests.
