Crankbaits for walleyes: Here’s what to know as seasons change

Crankbaits are a proven lure for walleyes throughout the open-water season.
The type of crankbait you employ, however, varies depending on the season. In the cold water of spring and late fall, walleyes prefer a subtle, side-to-side wobble versus more animated action. As water temperatures increase and walleye metabolism gets a jumpstart, cranks with an energetic action start to get noticed. When water temperatures peak during the summer months walleyes are in full-time gorge mode, so crankbaits that exhibit a dynamic shimmy and tight wobble at slightly faster speeds get the nod.

SPF, the FDA and the best numbers to keep you protected from the sun

I pulled a tube of sunscreen from my boat’s glove compartment to slather on a layer of protection for my lips, face, ears – about the only portion of my skin exposed to the day’s sunbeams since I was wearing long sleeves, long pants and a wide-brimmed hat.
I asked a friend fishing with me if he wanted some. “Yes, please,” he said. Then when he looked at the tube he said, “I don’t think this stuff will work for me.”

The prevalence rate of chronic wasting disease in white-tailed deer in Montcalm County is on the rise.
According to Michigan DNR data of CWD in the central Lower Peninsula county, the apparent prevalence rate of diseased deer there rose from 2% in 2019 to 13.5% in 2022. Although adult bucks have the highest rate of infection, deer of all ages and both sexes from the county have tested positive for CWD.

Sport-fishing advocacy group has cautious optimism on Michigan’s tribal consent decree

Despite a recent court setback, the Coalition to Protect Michigan Resources – a group of sport fishing advocates that raised objections to the draft consent decree between Michigan’s American Indian tribes and the state of Michigan – is still “cautiously optimistic” about its chances of getting some relief from some of the agreed-upon provisions in the draft, said coalition President Tony Radjenovich.

Rains in Indianola and drought conditions near Onawa causing headaches at Iowa state parks

Heavy rains last week caused washouts and erosion at Lake Ahquabi State Park, delaying reopening of the park until mid-July.
Portions of Lake Ahquabi State Park have been closed since last summer for upgrades to park infrastructure including newly-paved roads and parking lots, campground electrical systems and enhancements to structures such as the beach house and lodge. The rain washed out gravel from camping pads, newly-seeded grass areas, and the final grading of the beach parking lot, which was set to be paved in a few days.
