There aren’t many lakes to choose from along the Blue Earth/Faribault county line in southern Minnesota. However, one worth noting is Lura Lake, just south of Mapleton. It’s a fishery with an interesting history that’s gone through some significant changes during the past 20 years or so.
Lura is a shallow lake with a maximum of depth of 9 feet, and it tends to “green up” during the summer months. Once its curlyleaf pondweed dies off in the summer, the lake turns into a sort of pea soup.

It didn’t take long for Todd Froberg, Minnesota DNR big-game program coordinator, to get a few emails from the public asking why the DNR would allow hunters of all ages to use crossbows during the state’s full archery season.
“I had to tell them it’s the Legislature (that legalized the activity),” Froberg said. “I really hadn’t heard much about anything having to do with crossbows for a few years now, or any kind of big talk.”
A look at how the DNR might track crossbow use and what Minnesotans might be able to glean from Missouri and Wisconsin deer harvest.
U.P. Whitetails of Marquette County is extremely concerned about the DNR’s proposed U.P. deer regulation changes.
The deer herd in the Upper Peninsula has been going downhill for the past 20 years due to habitat loss and a high predator load. In 2003, U.P. hunter harvest was 62,000 deer with an estimated population of 390,000 animals. For the past five years, hunter harvest has been around 30,000 deer or less.
