Beyond Minnesota: Man pleads guilty to picking up Yellowstone bison calf that was rejected by herd, euthanized

A man from Hawaii pleaded guilty May 31 to a charge alleging he picked up a bison calf in Yellowstone National Park, causing the animal’s herd to reject it and leading park officials to kill it rather than allow it to be a hazard to visitors.

Twin Cities Trout Unlimited has a slate of summer offerings for youth

For Bob Luck, there’s no better way to introduce kids to the outdoors than to put a rod and reel in their hands and teach them how to fish.
Beginning in early June and running through most of August, the Twin Cities Chapter of Trout Unlimited will do just that through its Summer Fishing Skills Program, which began in earnest in 2019.

Six people convicted of poaching Mississippi shovelnose sturgeon

Shovelnose sturgeon are a native fish known for their flesh and roe, an important part of the ecosystem, and they are protected with conservative harvest limits to ensure their populations remain stable. Minnesota DNR conservation officers and conservation wardens with the Wisconsin DNR had this all in mind in the spring of 2019, when they received a tip and began looking into the potential illegal take of shovelnose sturgeon in Pool 9 of the Mississippi River.

Group cites lack of specifics in critique of Minnesota’s Red Lake Wildlife Management Area plan

A watchdog group composed primarily of retired Minnesota DNR professionals is calling out DNR planners over “major concerns” it has with the agency’s recently released draft master plan for Red Lake Wildlife Management Area in northwestern Minnesota.
In a four-page letter emailed to Minnesota DNR Fish and Wildlife Director Dave Olfelt and Wildlife Section Manager Kelly Straka, WMA-AMA Stewardship Network founding members Craig Sterle and Gary Drotts detail their concerns about the draft plan, which, they say, is short on specifics, including language on the management of the WMA’s forested areas, and long on potential loopholes that could affect wildlife production in the future.

Pro Fishing Tip of the Week: Long-line jigging can be a helpful tool

One of my favorite ways to fish for and catch walleyes is what I call long-line jigging. I’ll work backwards into the wind along a weed edge or breakline.
I cast as far out as I can so I’m away from the boat. Then, I drag, pop, and let the jig sit, while using the backward movement of the boat to keep the line tight. I like to use a 1⁄8-ounce jig and I’m usually fishing more by faith than by the feel of the jig.
