Inspired by sharptails: Dave Pauly is the 2023 Minnesota Outdoor News Person of the Year

Dave Pauly’s dedication to sharptails – “firebirds,” he affectionately calls them – hasn’t diminished in the nine years since his DNR retirement. In fact, he’s more devoted particularly to the birds these days, expending time and energy and using his accumulated knowledge in leading the charge to create habitat for a wildlife species – a “species of greatest conservation need” in Minnesota – that continues to inspire and fascinate him.

Tips to get on April crappies before the spawn

There have been several reports recently that claim the crappie fishing in many lakes and reservoirs is red-hot. So if you like crappie fishing, things are starting to heat up.
Crappies don’t actually spawn until the water temperature is between 62 and 65 degrees (although black crappies may start a little earlier and white crappies a little later) but they begin actively seeking out suitable areas to spawn when the water is much cooler than that – around 55 degrees or so.

New switchgrass market may make more habitat for wildlife

Bruce Trumbower gazes at the 50 acres of switchgrass planted on his farm and sees a wildlife oasis.
The Luzerne County farmer has been actively involved in balancing agriculture with wildlife habitat, and he hopes other farmers can see the benefit as well. But in order for farm fields to double as wildlife habitat, he said, there needs to be a financial outlet.

Trout ‘keepers’ to hit streams this Saturday for Minnesota’s opener

The traditional “meat” stream-trout opener is set for April 15 across Minnesota, with stream flows and weather conditions in the heavily fished southeast shaping up well for Saturday after an inordinately cold start to spring.
The state’s cold-water streams that meander throughout the Driftless Area of southeastern Minnesota – a picturesque region of limestone bluffs, coulees, hills, and gurgling spring-fed waters of roughly 700 miles – are home to brown, rainbow, and brook trout. According to the Minnesota DNR, trout populations are near or at all-time highs on many streams.

Michigan’s 2022 bear season exceeded DNR’s desired harvest with growing population

The number of black bears registered by hunters in Michigan continued to climb during the 2022 seasons, according to preliminary figures from the DNR, even though state-issued license numbers remained the same as in 2021.
And harvest totals are expected to increase in the future as a result of a growing bear population, even though about 400 fewer bear tags will be up for grabs from the DNR this year.

Borrowed rifle put to good use on 200-inch buck in Ohio

In a nod to the increasing popularity of straight-walled cartridges for rifles in Ohio deer hunting, Andrew Mitchem put one to good use this past December.
On Dec. 1, 2022, Mitchem, of North Lewisburg in Champaign County, borrowed his buddy’s daughter’s rifle to kill a buck that is certainly headed for the Buckeye Big Buck Club and Boone and Crockett lore.
