Long Island turkey hunters are about to get their first taste of spring gobbler action thanks to one of two changes to New York’s spring turkey hunting regulations. Last summer, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation announced changes that established a spring turkey season in Suffolk County starting this spring with a season limit of one bearded bird. Also, No. 9 shot is now legal for hunting turkeys statewide during both the fall and spring seasons.

I’ve always appreciated the complexities of nature, including the connection of individual fish and wildlife species to food, water, space and where they call home. If you hunt upland game, the importance of grassland habitat and pollinators is mutual to game and hunters.
Beyond the more obvious connections of ducks and wetlands or pheasants and grass, the foundational importance of insects and the beginning of the food chain are pollinators. Call them an indicator species, but if you read or hear about work to help monarchs or meadowlarks, it will also benefit those species you enjoy hunting.

A total of 257 adult northern pike were collected in one night. The fish were transported to the Spirit Lake Hatchery. The broodstock produced over 2.4 million eggs which are currently being incubated in special jars that allow fresh water to flow over the eggs, supplying oxygen. In less than two weeks, the fry will hatch and be stocked into Iowa’s shallow lakes.

Crews with the Iowa DNR Fisheries Bureau will set gillnets at night in traditional areas looking for walleyes that are ready to spawn. This time of year, hatcheries operate into the early hours of the morning as local staff bring in the nightly haul well past midnight. As fish “ripen,” the eggs are removed from the walleyes and the fish are returned to the lake where they were caught to make room for the next night’s catch.

While Dave told me multiple times that receiving the award is a great honor, I look at it a bit differently.
To me, the honor is being able to A) select an outstanding conservationist for the award; B) interview and get to better know that individual; and C) write about that individual.
