Inspired by sharptails: Dave Pauly is the 2023 Minnesota Outdoor News Person of the Year

Minnesota Outdoor News Editor Tim Spielman, left, presented the Person of the Year award to Dave Pauly when they met recently for a chat and a meal at Freddie’s Family Restaurant in Mora.

Dave Pauly’s dedication to sharptails – “firebirds,” he affectionately calls them – hasn’t diminished in the nine years since his DNR retirement. In fact, he’s more devoted particularly to the birds these days, expending time and energy and using his accumulated knowledge in leading the charge to create habitat for a wildlife species – a “species of greatest conservation need” in Minnesota – that continues to inspire and fascinate him.
