Minnesota man ventures south to answer a calling in world championship

When Mike Anderson exited the calling stage in the third and final round of the 89th annual World’s Championship Duck Calling Contest in Stuttgart, Ark., on Nov. 30, his future plans had already been decided.
Anderson, 44, of Mankato, Minn., who won the prestigious event in 2009, had decided, regardless of how well he did, he would continue to compete.
“I decided I was going to give myself a five-year window – maybe until I’m 50 – then I’ll probably hang it up for good,” said Anderson, who placed 12th among 56 of the world’s best competition callers.

Is it ever too cold to hunt your dog? The answer involves many factors

A few weeks ago, sipping black coffee at my desk around 6 a.m., an email dropped into my inbox from an address I didn’t recognize.
It was from a reader who lives in southeastern Minnesota. He asked me an intriguing question, but one I’ve scarcely ever pondered: Is it ever too cold to hunt your dog?
Hmm. A good question, I told him, and one I intended to research. The short answer is: It depends.

‘Remarkable’ comeback complete, Lake Superior lake trout will provide fish to stock Minnesota’s inland lakes

For the first time in history, the Minnesota DNR is planning to use lake trout from Lake Superior as broodstock to meet stocking quotas on inland lakes in northern Minnesota.
If disease testing checks out, the new stocking regimen will start in fall 2025.
“It’s a really great rehabilitation story, going from almost extirpation of lake trout from Lake Superior in the 1950s to now using it as a source for inland stocking throughout Minnesota,” said Cory Goldsworthy, Lake Superior area fisheries supervisor for the Minnesota DNR.

Is a late, great push on the way for Minnesota waterfowl hunters?

If you haven’t already winterized your duck boat and packed away your decoys, push poles, and other waterfowling gear, this week’s weather forecast of cold weather and northwesterly winds should jump-start what has been a lackluster 2024 duck and goose migration.
While the duck season ended Tuesday in the state’s North Zone, waterfowlers may hunt through Nov. 24 in the state’s Central and South zones.

For our Underappreciated Grasslands, we can do better

I stood on a rise overlooking a sweeping cattle ranch in west-central South Dakota. The Missouri River pulsed and churned not far away. A flock of regal pintails wheeled in the distant sapphire sky. A spectacular uprising of autumnal colors – hues of butterscotch, lemonade, crimson, and everything in between – blanketed the landscape.

Decoy ‘ditch ducks’ magically reproducing in Minnesota’s Aitkin County

Author and outdoorsman Doug Lodermeier doesn’t remember the precise date and year, but he does recall doing an extreme double-take.
An avid bird hunter, Lodermeier, 69, of Edina, Minn., was heading north along Highway 65 in Aitkin County near McGregor, an unremarkable stretch of road he has traveled many times over the years on his way to hunt ruffed grouse and woodcock. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw flickers of color. Decoys – indeed, many decoys painted in a kaleidoscope of vibrant colors and patterns – sat bobbing and listing in the marshy ditch.

Shallow streams, weather extremes hinder Minnesota’s North Shore fish

After a spring and early summer of intense rains and flooding, drought conditions have reduced the flows of some of Lake Superior’s North Shore streams, in some cases to a trickle, thus putting in jeopardy populations of various trout species heading into winter.
The weather extremes – which some DNR officials and fishing guides worry is the new normal – are testing the resiliency of Lake Superior streams and the fish (steelhead, brook trout, and other species) popular with anglers that inhabit them.

Dry, unseasonably warm weather hindering things for Minnesota bird hunters

For bird hunters across Minnesota, whether they’re chasing ducks, ruffed grouse, or pheasants, the weather has defined much of the season so far.
With strong southerly winds and temperatures routinely in the 70s, the duck migration has been almost nonexistent, aside from some “calendar migrants” such as ring-necked ducks moving through the state. Parched uplands and forests – save some parts of the Arrowhead region – are the norm, as are receding wetlands, shallow lakes, and river systems.

For these Minnesota deer campers, the focus is on the food

At 5 a.m. sharp on Thursday, Nov. 7, two days before the Minnesota firearms deer opener, Scott Doheny and three others will depart his New Prague home with a camper in tow for a spit of northwoods public land near Grand Rapids.
By roughly 1 p.m., and after eating breakfast at Merlin’s Family Restaurant in Princeton, they’ll crack a beer and toast another year of deer camp. Camp will already be set up. Portable deer stands, too. For Doheny, 56, and David Anderson, 49, of New Market, this year marks their 25th anniversary of hunting at the same location.
